Broadstairs Brims with Tutu Pride on Tutu Tuesday!

The sun was shining, the seagulls were squawking, and the air was buzzing with a palpable energy... that’s what I felt as I waltzed into Broadstairs this past Tuesday for the biggest, boldest, most beautiful Tutu Tuesday the town has ever seen! I've been a ballet dancer since I could walk, and trust me, there’s nothing more liberating than swirling around in a fluffy tulle creation – especially when you're doing it alongside a whole community of fabulous folks.

Let’s rewind a little, shall we? It all started on my Instagram feed. I saw a post about #tututuesday, this global movement encouraging people to wear tutus on the first Tuesday of every month. A movement promoting individuality, self-expression, and of course, joy! You know I’m all about spreading some joy and sparkle, and as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to get involved.

So, I decided to host my own Tutu Tuesday in Broadstairs, a seaside town with a thriving LGBTQ+ community that I love. I was expecting a handful of tutu-lovers to show up, maybe some fellow dancers or even a few mums with their little ones – but what I got was absolutely phenomenal!

There was a massive turnout! People from all walks of life embraced the tutu spirit – young and old, dancers and non-dancers, families and friends. The high street was bursting with vibrant colours. We saw tutus in every shape and style, from the classic ballerina ones with delicate embroidery to fun, sequined ones that swayed with every step.

  • We had the sassy short tutu perfect for twirling, with vibrant pink feathers bursting from the bottom.
  • Then, we had some show stopping knee-length tutus - a dazzling array of blues, yellows, and oranges.
  • Then there were the floor-grazing creations! Majestic tulle and extravagant embellishments... oh my!

But the highlight of the day was the atmosphere. It was electric! People were smiling, laughing, taking pictures, and just enjoying each other's company. It was like a big, happy, tutu-clad family reunion, where the only rule was to wear a tutu with pride, no matter your size, shape, or style.

For me, Tutu Tuesday was much more than just a fashion statement. It was a statement about acceptance and inclusion, a celebration of our differences and a reminder that we’re all stronger when we come together.

It was a powerful reminder to live our best, truest, most joyful selves – something that resonates particularly with the LGBTQ+ community.

If you’re wondering what to do for the next Tutu Tuesday (it's the first Tuesday of each month, don’t forget!), grab your friends, find the brightest, most fun tutu you can, and strut your stuff! Share it online using #tututuesday and #tutupride.

Remember, whether you’re a seasoned ballerina or a tutu newbie, it’s about celebrating individuality, spreading positivity and joy, and just having fun. Because there’s nothing more exhilarating than feeling empowered and dancing through life in your own unique way, whether it’s in a tutu, sneakers, or anything in between.
