Tutu Tuesday in Rapid City, South Dakota #tututuesday

Hey dance fam, it's your girl, Ava, bringing you another #tututuesday! Today, we're venturing into the heartland, all the way to Rapid City, South Dakota. You know how much I love exploring the ballet scene across the US, and let me tell you, South Dakota has some seriously talented dancers.

First things first, let's talk about the tutus. South Dakota dancers definitely know how to rock the classic, romantic tutus. They're big, they're fluffy, they make a statement. It's all about elegance and graceful movements. There were also a few modern, contemporary styles, a little less poofy, more about movement and functionality, which is a fresh twist.

I was lucky enough to catch a performance at the beautiful Rushmore Center for the Performing Arts, a modern space with acoustics so perfect it almost brought me to tears! There was a performance by the Black Hills Ballet Company, featuring a mixed program of pieces. We had "Giselle", which, if you're a dance aficionado, is a must-see. The costumes? GORGEOUS. Talk about tutus with personality! You can always rely on a classical piece to make a statement with its tulle, and this production definitely lived up to expectations.

But let's talk about what really struck me. One particular piece really brought a fresh new perspective to ballet, a contemporary piece set to the music of the one and only Stevie Wonder! This was a fusion of ballet and modern movement, featuring tutus that moved and swayed with the dancer, emphasizing those fluid lines, you know? It was just SO dynamic, and you could tell the dancers had put so much heart into their performance. They truly captured the energy and spirit of Wonder’s music, showcasing that ballet doesn’t need to be stuck in a rigid past. And trust me, these were NOT your grandma’s tutus. Think more form-fitting and modern with strategically placed panels of tulle for a sleek and almost edgy look. These ballerinas were rocking a fresh take on ballet!

The overall atmosphere at the Rushmore Center was simply electric. The audience was so engaged, there were so many gasps of awe, and I swear I saw tears of joy! Rapid City knows how to appreciate a good dance show.

It was great to see so many young people in the audience too! This reminded me that we can't lose sight of introducing ballet to new generations, and showcasing what ballet can be! It’s more than a traditional form, it’s a space for innovation, artistic expression, and yes, even a bit of tulle fun.

Here are some things I learned during my #tututuesday in Rapid City:

  • South Dakota might be a bit landlocked, but its dancers have serious skills. And I’m not just saying that because the steak is amazing there!
  • There are so many ways to approach ballet. Traditional tutus? Absolutely. But contemporary and modern ballet have their own space to create stunningly original dance performances.
  • Don’t judge a state by its size! It’s possible to find ballet magic even in the unlikeliest of places! You might just need to venture beyond your typical dance destinations.

So if you’re in South Dakota, or looking for an awesome road trip, definitely stop by Rapid City! Check out a performance, enjoy the local food, and dance the night away!

Until next time, happy dancing!
