Tutu Tuesday in Dubuque, Iowa: A Ballet Blogger's Diary

Hey Tutu Twirlers! It's your girl, Amelia, back with another #TutuTuesday post, straight from the heartland! Today's adventure takes us to Dubuque, Iowa, a city that surprised me with its rich artistic history, even going so far as to having its own Ballet Theatre company! Who knew?

Now, I know what you're thinking, "Iowa? Isn't that cornfields and… well, more cornfields?" But trust me, my fellow dance lovers, this Midwestern gem has a hidden treasure—the Dubuque Arts Center! Tucked away in a beautiful old Victorian house, it feels like stepping back in time but in the best way possible.

Walking through the halls, I was transported. The air was thick with the scent of old books and art supplies, the walls lined with stunning artwork that could easily compete with the grand galleries of New York or Chicago. The artistic spirit truly felt alive and well here.

The best part? I was treated to a captivating performance by Dubuque Ballet Theatre, which honestly stole my heart. The talent was off the charts, showcasing both power and grace. And, to my delight, they had the most gorgeous collection of tutus I've seen in a while!

Now, let's talk #TutuTuesday fashion:

  • For the grand pas de deux, the prima ballerina stole the show with a classic Romantic tutu in a stunning blush pink. The layers of tulle floated effortlessly as she spun and leaped, leaving me speechless. So beautiful! I must add this style to my tutu wish list!
  • I was absolutely smitten with the corps de ballet's sleek, modern tutus. The lines were sharp, the fabric rich, and the movement felt like pure electricity! I was digging the modern take on a classic - I wouldn't hesitate to rock a similar design for a street style outfit.
  • Finally, the finale had everyone gasp. The male dancers wore stunningly beautiful and almost unexpected "tutus." Think more of a billowing cape, almost a hybrid between a tunic and a traditional ballet tutu. The flow of the material combined with their impressive athleticism made for a visual treat. These pieces are definitely a new favorite! I could easily envision adapting them into modern wear, paired with leather leggings and chunky boots.

As I danced my way through the halls, a sense of joy filled me. This small town embraced ballet with a passion that was inspiring, proving that the beauty and artistry of dance transcends location and transcends expectations. Dubuque, Iowa, you are a #TutuTuesday dream!

Now, don't let the "cornfields and cows" image fool you! Iowa, like all the states in the USA, boasts a wealth of ballet talents and traditions. I’m off to discover more and hopefully discover a new Tutu Tuesday treasure in another state, perhaps the next stop will be Texas! Stay tuned!
