Tutu Tuesday in Schaumburg, Illinois! #tututuesday

Hey, dancers! It’s your girl, Chloe here, bringing you the latest on the world of tutus (and the life of a ballet dancer, duh!)

So, it's Tutu Tuesday, and as any self-respecting ballerina knows, it’s all about celebrating the glorious tutu. And trust me, we have A LOT to celebrate. From the classic romantic tutus to the sleek contemporary styles, tutus are not just a piece of costume; they're a symbol of art, strength, and beauty!

Here in the States, especially in the Chicagoland area, there’s been a renewed love for ballet. The Chicago-based Joffrey Ballet, with its fantastic repertoire, has brought in a fresh wave of audiences who are hungry for artistry. And of course, everyone loves tutus!

Today, I want to take a little trip down Tutu Lane and explore some of the most beloved styles:

  • The Romantic Tutu: Oh, this is the one that always gets my heart fluttering! This classic design, made of layers upon layers of tulle, embodies pure romance and grace. The romantic tutu is my go-to choice when performing a dreamy Giselle or a swoon-worthy La Sylphide. It truly takes you back to the romanticism of classical ballet, and there's something just magical about twirling in it.
  • The "Classical" or "Bell" Tutu: You know you're seeing a real ballerinas' ballet when you see a beautiful bell tutu onstage. The full, pouffy, and voluminous shape of this tutu makes it a statement. But it's not just for show - it accentuates those incredible pirouettes and grand jetés. The shape helps to highlight the grace of a ballerina's movements while still offering a beautiful visual that draws the audience in.
  • The Contemporary Tutu: Let's be honest, it's not just the Romantic era that got tutus right! Modern dancers have been reimagining the classic tutu for a while now. These tutus, with their simpler silhouettes and bold use of materials like stretchy fabrics or layers of silk, can be super sleek and minimalist or incorporate funky accents for extra flair. I love them for their modern edge! And I gotta tell you, the flexibility of the contemporary tutu just brings another layer to dancing. I can hit my turns, leaps, and dynamic choreography in a style that makes it feel like it's an extension of my body.

What's fantastic about the world of dance and tutus in Schaumburg is that it's really starting to take off! Our local community has an amazing selection of ballet studios and even a theater dedicated to performing arts - the Prairie Center for the Arts! They have some fantastic dancers that go to college nearby! With such a supportive community, I'm so excited for the future of dance in this area.

But no matter the style, the tutu is an integral part of the ballet dancer's costume. It lets us express the power of the dance while looking and feeling amazing, so I just wanted to take a moment and celebrate the tutu, in all its glory! And yes, that means I’ll be twirling in a tutu today! Because, why not? It's Tutu Tuesday in Schaumburg, Illinois. We're out here living our best ballerina lives, one twirl at a time!
