Lakewood, CA #tututuesday: A Tutu Tuesday Adventure

Hey, fashionistas! It's your girl, Ashley, back with another installment of Tutu Tuesday! We all know Tuesdays are a drag, but let's be real, when you rock a tutu, it's basically a guaranteed good day. This week, we're bringing the twirl to the sunny streets of Lakewood, California, a city known for its vibrant art scene and… well, you know, a pretty stellar selection of frozen yogurt shops. Let’s be honest, I don't just wear a tutu on Tuesdays. I wear it as often as I can get away with. Honestly, when I was younger, I was so used to seeing tutus on the ballet stage, I was afraid of making a fool of myself. Let’s be real, it’s hard not to look a little ridiculous. And that's fine with me. A little “too much” is always the perfect amount when it comes to fashion.

This week, I went for a classic Romantic Tutu – you know, the one that makes you look like a fairytale princess – because, well, why not? This tutu features multiple layers of tulle, which creates a dramatic, billowing effect that's absolutely stunning when I dance (and pretty fabulous just walking down the street, tbh). You guys are in for a real treat this Tuesday – because this one isn't just about the look. We’re going to be covering ballet in the US, what kind of tutus you might need to know about for the stage and beyond. It’s Tutu Tuesday, y’all!

So, What’s a Tutu Anyway?

Okay, I know some of you might be thinking, "Tut-what-now? A tutu?! Is that something that I need?" It’s totally okay if you’ve never been exposed to a world of ballet. If we’re being completely honest, I’m sure there are lots of tutu newbies out there! (Welcome! I’m glad you’re joining me. It's always fun to learn something new.)

But before we get too deep into Tutu Tuesday fashion tips, we need to understand what a tutu is, where it came from, and its uses. We're going to delve into some tutu history because you know what? Knowledge is power! This is about so much more than fashion - it’s about the legacy of ballet itself. Ballet, as you may know, is all about precise movements. So when it comes to tutus – well – that makes the movements a bit more dramatic!

What Are the Different Types of Tutus?

  • Romantic Tutus: We mentioned it before. It’s your standard ballerina image. This tulle-heavy look makes them extra bouffant – which, in English, is a very fancy way of saying fluffy. They make every ballerina look graceful, especially in classical pieces like the waltz!
  • Classical Tutus: Now this one has two different versions - which sometimes people call a ‘bell skirt’. It’s mostly worn by those ballet stars you see in classical ballet! That said, these skirts are so iconic – you might actually wear one too. I don’t think it’s super hard to pull off, personally!
  • Short Tutus: We’re getting more contemporary here – these ones tend to show off more leg. They were really big in the middle of the 20th century in some American ballet companies! You can get super creative with fabrics too!
  • Tutu variations: Let’s get creative, OK? This might be the *most* interesting of the bunch! Basically, this tutu comes from any time after ballet started in the mid-17th century. You might find any and every fabric imaginable – and they usually include pants! It's totally cool for a new wave of dancers.
  • You really want to stand out from the crowd? How about a *double* or *triple* layer? Yeah, I know it’s crazy - but when we’re on stage - it’s an easy way to create really dramatic visual movement with your dress! Imagine an audience cheering in awe over the layers. *This is a ballerina’s world*!

Tutu Tuesday in Lakewood, California

Back in Lakewood! I just wanted to remind you guys, Lakewood has become a place that’s increasingly connected to American ballet. Why not check out our many dance studios, local events, and shows happening at our art scene? That said, this is my version of *ballet on the street*. No, there aren’t professional ballerinas showing up here – just me and all of you fashion fans – who get to be ballerinas in your everyday life! No stage, no dress rehearsal, no choreographer. What we do is wear the tutu with pride, and share our individual flair.
