Tutu Tuesday in Plano, Texas: A Celebration of All Things Ballet! #tututuesday
Hey everyone! It's your girl, Maddie, here, and guess what? It's Tutu Tuesday in Plano, Texas! 🩰 For those of you who are new to my little corner of the internet, Tutu Tuesday is a weekly celebration of all things ballet - from the classic romantic tutus to the more modern and experimental styles.
I’m sure you are thinking to yourselves: "Wait, ballet in Plano?" That's right! There is a thriving ballet scene here, thanks to the incredible studios like the Plano Ballet Academy, which nurture a love for the art in our younger generations. Plus, there are awesome performance venues like the Plano Centre for the Performing Arts, where I've seen amazing ballet productions featuring dancers from all over the state of Texas. Let's not forget the Plano Independent School District's arts program which provides students with an excellent outlet for expressing themselves. These schools also provide opportunities for kids to become proficient at a young age, providing a solid foundation to help them hone their talents as they develop, setting them on a potential trajectory for them to excel in a professional dancing capacity should they chose to.
This week on Tutu Tuesday, I want to talk about the **different types of tutus** we can see on stage. There’s more than one style you know! Let’s explore a few!
- **Romantic tutu** (which, no, this is not what people are talking about when they refer to romantic novels.) is super airy and lightweight! It is made from a ton of layers of soft tulle, often featuring beautiful embellishments that move gracefully as the dancers spin! It is super ethereal! This type of tutu was actually born out of the Romantic Ballet movement in the 19th century, so it’s kinda iconic.
- **Classical tutu** is made of a single layer of stiff tulle (yes, you read that correctly! Just one layer.) and typically comes in a bell shape. This look has been featured in iconic ballet productions like **Swan Lake**, so if you’ve seen this, you know what I am talking about! They really amplify a dancer's powerful and graceful movements!
- **Contemporary tutu**. This tutu often challenges the traditional ideas about how a tutu "should" look, sometimes even omitting the tulle completely! Some contemporary tutus embrace asymmetric and geometric shapes that showcase modern dance movements.
Whether it's the romantic, ethereal design, the timeless beauty of the classical style, or the dynamic versatility of the contemporary tutu, there's something absolutely magical about these amazing pieces. This Tuesday, let’s give a shout-out to all the talented artists who design, craft and wear them.
