Tutu Tuesday in Redmond, Washington: A Celebration of Dance and Fashion

It's Tuesday, which means it's time for Tutu Tuesday! As a professional ballerina and blogger based in Redmond, Washington, I'm here to share my love for all things tutus. Whether you're a seasoned dancer or just appreciate a good twirl, Tutu Tuesday is a chance to celebrate the artistry and joy of ballet, and, let's be honest, it's an excuse to flaunt a beautiful, flowy tutu.

For those unfamiliar with Tutu Tuesday, it's a movement I started a few years ago in an effort to spark conversation about dance and fashion, and of course, celebrate the timeless beauty of tutus. Every Tuesday, dancers across the nation and beyond are encouraged to share photos of themselves in their tutus, using the hashtag #tututuesday on social media. We're a community of twirl enthusiasts united by a shared love of dance, fashion, and the sheer happiness that a tutu can bring. I've seen everything from romantic, flowy tulle to whimsical, colorful creations.

But Tutu Tuesday is about more than just photos. It's a chance for dancers to connect, inspire one another, and raise awareness for the beautiful art form that is ballet in the USA. From renowned companies like New York City Ballet and San Francisco Ballet to smaller regional schools like my own, dance thrives throughout the country, and Tutu Tuesday gives us a platform to showcase that vibrant scene. We are lucky to live in a place where we can express ourselves through movement, and I think that's something we should all celebrate.

If you're a dancer, I urge you to join the Tutu Tuesday movement. Snap a picture of your favorite tutu and share it online using #tututuesday! I can't wait to see what amazing creations you come up with.

Here are some fun facts about tutus that might inspire your #tututuesday post:

  • Did you know that tutus have evolved a lot over the years? The first tutus, which appeared in the 19th century, were made of short, ruffled skirts. Today, we see a variety of styles, including the classical "Romantic tutu," with its layered tulle and long, flowing silhouette, and the more contemporary "modern tutu," which features simple, sleek lines.
  • Each tutu is uniquely made for the specific performance or dancer's style.
  • There's even a "Tutu Museum" in St. Petersburg, Florida! Dedicated to the history and development of tutus.

To help get your creative juices flowing for #tututuesday here are some tutu-inspiration tips:

  • Go classic: A classic Romantic tutu in a soft color like pink or white is a timeless choice. Perfect for any occasion.
  • Embrace color and texture: Make a statement with a bold color or an interesting pattern.
  • Don't forget the accessories: Accessorize with a ballet bun, some makeup, or jewelry to create a more polished look.
  • Play with different textures. Satin, chiffon, and tulle can be combined to create interesting effects.
  • Accessorize with ribbon, sequins, or lace.
  • Use natural elements like flowers, feathers, or leaves for an extra touch of flair.
  • And donโ€™t forget your best ballerina smile!

Tutus can be elegant, romantic, edgy, and even humorous. But, most of all, they represent the joy and freedom of dance. They invite us to embrace our creativity, celebrate our passions, and most importantly, twirl to our hearts' content.

So put on your favorite tutu, and let's celebrate the art of dance and fashion on Tutu Tuesday. Be sure to share your amazing #tututuesday photos on social media and tag me - @DancingDivaInRedmond.
