Tutu Tuesday in Wrexham

Alright, lovelies, get ready for a blog post that's more dazzling than a prima ballerina under the stage lights. Today, we're talking Tutu Tuesday, and not just any Tutu Tuesday, mind you, but a #tututuesday adventure in Wrexham! For the uninitiated, Tutu Tuesday is a fabulous social media event, dedicated to the whimsical world of tutus. It’s a chance to unleash your inner ballerina, even if your biggest stage experience involves a wobbly attempt at the Charleston at a wedding reception. No judgment here – everyone's welcome to twirl, prance, and embrace the sheer joyousness of the tutu. I had been itching to explore Wrexham for a while, it’s the second largest town in Wales, known for its Victorian architecture and charming market square. But this week, the town has become synonymous with an explosion of tulle and frills for me, thanks to #tututuesday.

I began my day at the historic Wrexham Guildhall, which boasts the most intricate plasterwork you’ll ever see. But, instead of gazing at its Victorian majesty, my eyes were drawn to a flock of tutu-clad ladies gathering by the entrance. With its sweeping staircase and imposing arches, the Guildhall seemed a fitting backdrop for a dance sequence in a classical ballet, the very type of stage you could imagine these tutu wearers about to perform on. I didn’t hesitate. A snap-happy dance teacher was waiting for me by the entrance – my Tutu Tuesday dance troupe!

Here’s what I loved: the mix and match of tutues was fantastic. From billowing, tiered, traditional, Romantic-style tutus (the ones favoured by a famous ballerina back in the day), and a rainbow of shades from pastel pinks and buttery yellows to shocking cerulean and the ever-classic white.

  • We had the tutus you imagine –the romantic full-length tutus favoured by princesses in fairytales, their full tiers flowing and billowing with every spin.
  • We had the tutus I associate with ballet, the very ones you can see in iconic photos of ballet legends like Margot Fonteyn.
  • We had the shorter, more modern tutus in bold, striking hues, perfectly suitable for some street-style ballerina vibes.
  • And of course, no Tutu Tuesday would be complete without the ones that would definitely attract attention. Those are the tutus you can see a mile off because they are adorned with sequins, feathers, crystals, lace and embroidery – tutus that would have given the swan queen herself a run for her money.

So what's my verdict? If you're in the Wrexham area this month, and looking for an excuse to break out of your usual Monday blues, I highly recommend the town's version of #tututuesday, which they run throughout May. I was also in awe at the spirit of the people of Wrexham and the buzz it creates in town. Everyone was game, especially the staff at The Lamb Inn - a centuries old inn in Wrexham that looked ready for a shot in a Tudor drama. The ladies even got permission from the friendly staff to put their own dance on their fabulous, historical cobbled courtyard, proving that Tutu Tuesday in Wrexham really was the place to be.

And here’s the real takeaway: we all found joy and laughter together in the celebration of dance. That, my dear readers, is something I think everyone deserves, no matter where you find yourself.
