Folkestone: Tutu Tuesday & The Tutu Revival

It's Tuesday, which can only mean one thing - Tutu Tuesday! 🩰 This weekly ritual has become a staple in the ballet world, and frankly, it's catching on like wildfire. But today, my dears, I'm taking it to the streets of Folkestone. And trust me, you don't want to miss this!

Folkestone, that beautiful coastal town known for its quirky charm and vibrant arts scene, is becoming the unexpected epicentre of Tutu Tuesday. As a lifelong ballerina (and a recent resident of this charming seaside town), I'm seeing a movement blooming that has the power to transform the way we think about ballet wear, even beyond the stage. I'm talking tutus on the promenade, tutus in the cafe, tutus everywhere! 💖

It all began with a casual post on my Instagram. I was wearing a whimsical, feather-trimmed tulle tutu paired with a comfy oversized knit and thought, "Why not wear this out for a coffee? Who's going to judge?" To my surprise, my followers were all for it, sharing their own "Tutu Tuesday" stories and even challenging me to start a movement in Folkestone.

Well, challenge accepted! The next Tuesday, I took my sparkly, pink, Romantic-era tutu, complete with delicate floral embroidery, out into the town. It felt liberating, a joyous defiance against the ordinary. As I strolled through the cobbled streets, people smiled, gave me thumbs up, and even some complimented my outfit! It was exhilarating. The world, it seemed, was ready for tutu revival. 💫

But let's be clear, it's not just about strutting around in tutus. Tutu Tuesday is about embracing confidence, finding beauty in unexpected places, and reminding ourselves that life is meant to be lived with a dash of magic.

Folkestone's embrace of Tutu Tuesday has been phenomenal. Everywhere you look, a splash of tulle. The vintage shops are overflowing with vintage tutus – from classic Romantic-era, graceful designs to the 20th Century’s whimsical "fluffy" tutu creations, perfect for twirling with gusto.

The locals are going wild with it. From local dance studios like Folkestone Dance Academy hosting tutu workshops, to cafes hosting "Tutu Tea" parties (where you can enjoy delicious cakes and hot chocolate while wearing a tutu), it seems there's something for everyone.

Don’t get me wrong, wearing a tutu out and about is not for everyone! But that’s the beauty of it. It’s about making your own choices and feeling fabulous about them.

  • For some, Tutu Tuesday is about making a statement.
  • For others, it's a reminder to tap into their inner child and let loose.
  • And for some, it's about subverting expectations, breaking free from societal norms, and finding the freedom to express themselves.

There are plenty of different styles of tutus too:

  • There are the delicate romantic-era tutus with a whisper-thin layering of tulle, perfectly suited to creating a vintage and ethereal feel. These are the tutus for those who are bold but understated.
  • There are the lavish tutus with billowing tiers of tulle, perfect for those who love drama and statement dressing.
  • And of course, there are the whimsical, brightly coloured tutus for those who are all about bold fun. Just imagine them twirling, spinning and bouncing – truly a sight to behold! 💫

I encourage all my fellow fashionistas in Folkestone (and beyond) to participate in this delightful trend! Get out there, put on a tutu and have some fun! Who knows, you might just spark a tutu revolution of your own. 💖

Whether it's the local craft brewery where you meet up with your friends, the local farmers' market for your weekend shopping, or a night out to Folkestone's Theatre Square, I bet you will see at least one ballerina floating by in her tutu. If not, well, why not become one? Be bold, embrace your inner sparkle, and remember: Tutu Tuesday is a celebration of individuality and joy!

If you do get out and about with a Tutu this Tuesday (or any Tuesday!), remember to tag #tututuesday, #folkestone, and #tutulife for a chance to be featured in my next blog post! ✨
