Sutton's Tutu Tuesday: A Celebration of Swirling Skirts and Sugar Plum Dreams

It’s Tuesday, which means only one thing in the world of ballerinas (and, let’s face it, anyone with a love for twirling): Tutu Tuesday! In Sutton, we take this weekly ritual seriously, celebrating all things tulle and taffeta. And trust me, Sutton has a lot to celebrate. From the traditional romantic tutus of Swan Lake to the modern, edgy styles seen in contemporary pieces, there’s a tutu for everyone. And we love showing them off!

Here’s a glimpse into how Sutton embraced Tutu Tuesday:

My day started with a spot of morning ballet class, but instead of my usual workout clothes, I opted for a classically elegant tulle tutu, with a layered skirt and soft, romantic blush pink hue. This little number is perfect for those days when you want to feel a bit extra and unleash your inner prima ballerina. You know the feeling.

Next, it was time to grab coffee and catch up with my best friend, Lucy. Lucy’s tutu of choice today was a fun, whimsical, and modern confection, reminiscent of the playful world of a ballet like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. With a layered tulle skirt in an array of colours, she was a vision of creative freedom and expressive energy.

After a delicious brunch of pancakes and fruit, the real Tutu Tuesday festivities began. Sutton’s bustling market square had transformed into a vibrant kaleidoscope of tulle and lace. Stalls were brimming with all manner of tutu-themed goods - handmade tutus for aspiring ballerinas, sparkling hair clips, adorable tutu-themed clothing for little ones, and even a baker selling mini cupcakes shaped like little ballet shoes!

I felt a surge of excitement as I mingled with fellow tutu enthusiasts. Everyone was radiating good vibes. Conversations swirled around favourite tutu styles:

  • The iconic "Romantic Tutu" - synonymous with classics like Giselle and Swan Lake, with its single layer of tulle and delicate construction that adds a soft, ethereal touch.
  • The modern "Bell Tutu" - with its fuller shape and graceful drape, these tutus offer a dynamic and dramatic element to contemporary works.
  • The playful "Pouette Tutu" - which is basically a mini skirt tutu that screams "fun!" They’re a popular choice for younger ballerinas who just want to twirl around and feel the wind beneath their skirts!

And then, there were the elaborate, bespoke designs that had attendees swooning. A beautiful woman was showing off her stunning hand-sewn tutu that was embellished with dazzling crystals, showcasing the intricate beauty that only meticulous craftsmanship could achieve. And the colours! Bold purples, shimmering greens, vibrant oranges – you name it, Sutton’s market was bursting with it!

The day concluded with a delightful performance by the Sutton Ballet School. Watching their talent and artistry truly felt like an honour. From intricate footwork to soaring leaps and captivating storytelling, they brought Tutu Tuesday to a fittingly elegant crescendo.

But Tutu Tuesday in Sutton isn't just about twirling and beautiful clothing, it’s about embracing individuality and self-expression, showcasing the joy and energy of the dance world. It's about celebrating a love for the beautiful, the whimsical, and the truly creative spirit that resonates through every layer of a tulle skirt. So whether you're a seasoned ballerina, a casual observer, or simply a lover of pretty things, don't forget to embrace your inner ballerina, because #tututuesday is more than just a day, it’s a state of mind.

Next week, I’ll be showcasing a daring and bold contemporary style tutu - the kind that’s sure to turn heads. So be sure to check back next Tuesday for more #tututuesday inspiration. Until then, keep on twirling, Sutton!
