Tutu Tuesday in Whitley Bay: A whirl of tulle and sunshine

It’s officially Tutu Tuesday! Every week I hit the streets of Whitley Bay to capture the best #tututuesday moments. This week’s been a cracker – a veritable flurry of tulle and sunshine, punctuated by bursts of laughter, swirling skirts, and the odd enthusiastic rendition of 'The Nutcracker' soundtrack. Yep, Whitley Bay really did turn into a ballet dancer's paradise.

But before we get to the action shots (because honestly, the outfits were a-ma-zing!), let's talk about tutu styles, darling. This week's fashion statement was a riot of variety, showcasing the ever-evolving landscape of tutu design.

The classic "Romantic" tutu was out in force – a gloriously full skirt of white tulle, light and airy as a summer breeze. This is the kind of tutu you picture when you think of Sleeping Beauty, a delicate silhouette that just floats around you. Perfect for channeling your inner ballerina, whether you're pirouetting by the seaside or just enjoying a delicious ice cream from one of Whitley Bay's fabulous little cafes.

But the “Romantic” wasn't the only tutu game in town! This week saw a bold, contemporary trend towards the "Demi-tutu." This slightly less full style sits just below the knee, offering a playful peek at your legs and a hint of rebellion. We saw them in vibrant colours, metallic fabrics, and even some funky patterns. Think futuristic ballerinas, dancing on the moon in glitter-tastic tulle.

Then there's the “Platter” tutu. For the ultimate show-stopper, the Platter is the one to go for. Picture a wide, perfectly flat disc of tulle, hugging your hips and trailing behind you as you walk. These beauties are a feast for the eyes, particularly when they’re layered up with a glamorous dress or top, adding a touch of extravagance and drama. Think “Moulin Rouge” but on the sunny promenade of Whitley Bay!

We had some fantastic finds among our #tututuesday warriors, including a group of friends who coordinated their outfits perfectly, rocking matching blue “Demi-tutues.” It was a total Instagram moment, with a backdrop of the majestic North Sea and a perfectly staged dance pose. There was a sense of fun and camaraderie, proof that the magic of the tutu extends beyond the dance studio.

Later on, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in glorious shades of pink and orange, I stumbled upon a little girl wearing the most adorable pink “Romantic” tutu. With pigtails bouncing as she skipped happily along the pier, she embodied pure joy. That, right there, is the true spirit of Tutu Tuesday – a celebration of imagination, self-expression, and pure unadulterated fun.

In all its glory, Tutu Tuesday is more than just a day – it's a movement. A testament to the fact that embracing your inner ballerina, regardless of age, size, or dance experience, can truly lift your spirits and transform your day into a whirlwind of sunshine, laughter, and tulle.

So, whether you're an accomplished dancer or a complete novice, why not embrace your inner ballerina next Tuesday? Throw on your favourite tutu, find your inner light, and join us for a fabulous day of tutus, sunshine, and the pure joy of dancing. You’ll be dancing into the weekend, trust me.

P.S. We have a *new* monthly tutu competition in Whitley Bay! The rules are simple – dress in your best tutu, tag #tututuesday, and post a picture online. Each month, a panel of experts (me!) will judge the entries and crown a ‘Tutu Queen/King’. More information to come…!

Until next week, may your Tuesdays be filled with twirls and smiles, darling!

In the spotlight - **Best Matching Tutus:** Those three friends absolutely nailed it! Those cobalt blue “Demi-tutues” were a vision and their playful pirouettes by the beach just solidified their top spot in this week's tutu showdown. - **Most Unique Tutu:** A cheeky little number in a shocking purple! The “Platter” style had a shimmering effect, capturing all the light and reminding us that, yes, purple is actually THE new black. This was a true testament to the fact that tulle can be fashion-forward and adventurous. - **Tutu-licious Kiddie:** The pint-sized “Romantic” tutu, it was pure cuteness overload, and a reminder of why Tutu Tuesday is a celebration for all ages! A future tutu queen, in the making!

Here are some tips to make your #tututuesday photos stand out:

  • Use natural light – sunlight does wonders for tulle. Embrace the beach as your stage!
  • Choose a flattering background – think beaches, gardens, or iconic landmarks in Whitley Bay.
  • Add some props! Flowers, parasols, sparkly fairy dust… just think “ballerina magic”.
