Tutu Tuesday in Earley: A Whirlwind of Tulle and Fashionable Fun
Ah, Tutu Tuesday! It's that glorious day of the week when we celebrate the graceful and iconic symbol of ballet: the tutu. Today, however, I’m not in the hallowed halls of a dance studio. I’m here in the lovely town of Earley, a bustling hub in the heart of Berkshire, exploring all things tutu. You might think a tutu is solely a stage accessory, but let me tell you, my fashionista friends, that is far from the truth!
It was an early start, but I couldn't resist getting to the Earley Farmers' Market, a buzzing collection of stalls boasting local produce, crafts, and yes, you guessed it – Tutus! That’s right, there was a stall dedicated to custom-made tutus for little dancers. Now, while I may not fit into those delightful mini-skirts of tulle anymore (a girl has to indulge in a little cake now and then!), it's the charm of seeing those young ballerinas, future prima donnas perhaps, twirling around in their handmade tutus that really puts a smile on my face. They remind me why I love ballet: the sheer joy of expressing oneself through movement and, let’s be honest, a fantastic outfit.
With my trusty notebook in hand, I jotted down the names of the vendors and the fabulous variety of tutus I saw:
- Romantic Tutus: These tutus had that airy, dreamlike feel about them with delicate layers of soft tulle that cascaded down like a fairytale princess. Think shimmering silks and a gentle colour palette of pinks, blush, and ivory. A real ballet classic!
- Modern Tutus: Don't let the word "modern" fool you. It doesn't mean less tulle or less drama. Think sharp lines, bold colours, and more fitted styles. The one I spotted on a local schoolgirl with its fierce red and black design almost made me reconsider my commitment to classical tutus!
- Short & Sweet: These were for the tiny tot ballerina and those that preferred something shorter, often seen as an entry point for tiny dancing divas into the tutu world. There were even options for character tutus! I almost took one of those miniature Sleeping Beauty tutus for my niece – I'm not saying she’s the next Aurora, but she’s a true princess, don’t you think?
- Colour Explosion: If you love a bit of pizzazz, then this was the style for you. Forget your classical blush, it’s time to step out in tutus boasting neon pinks, fiery oranges, and even some playful zebra prints! These were ideal for our younger generation who want a modern take on this classic piece.
From the charming market, I strolled down the pretty high street, eager to see if there was anything to tempt me sartorially, and my eye landed on a sweet shop! Not for the sugar-rush, but for the display of beautiful bonnets. And in this, I found an interesting parallel: just as bonnets have become fashionable beyond the confines of the kitchen, tutus can do the same! The beauty is the versatility. There’s no rule stating that you can only wear tutus for ballet class.
While there were no tutus in the window displays, I imagined what a Tutu Tuesday fashion challenge would look like in Earley!
Just picture this: Imagine me taking my stylish friends down Earley High Street, not for an afternoon of afternoon tea and gossip, but to find the perfect tutus.
- An elegant tutu-dress in a rich purple that you could pair with stylish ankle boots and a leather biker jacket would make a statement as you walk into that charming wine bar.
- The classic tulle mini skirt styled with a chunky knit and Doc Martens. A fashion choice for that edgy bohemian brunch with your friends.
- The short, fluffy tutu can even find its way to your Christmas festivities! Imagine, an ivory tutu layered over a glamorous evening gown for that touch of festive fun!
Now, I’m not saying every single outfit needs a tutu, but there’s definitely something fun, charming, and inherently celebratory about adding a bit of tulle into your ensemble. We live in a world of practicality, of comfort and function, but don't underestimate the power of the fun, unexpected, and the beautiful!
Just a little sprinkle of ballet in your day, and remember…

Now, where did I put my favourite ballerina flat shoes?
