Tutu Tuesday in Broadstairs: A Whirlwind of Tutu Glamour

It's Tuesday, which can only mean one thing: Tutu Tuesday! And this week, my fellow twirlers, we're taking the delightful tradition to the picturesque coastal town of Broadstairs, Kent. With its charming pebble beach, pastel-coloured houses, and an air of quintessential seaside charm, Broadstairs provided the perfect backdrop for a tutu-filled adventure.

I was, of course, dressed for the occasion. My chosen tutu this week was a dreamy, frothy confection in a soft blush pink, adorned with delicate layers of tulle. I'd paired it with a vintage lace crop top, a touch of shimmery gold jewellery, and some seriously comfortable, but equally stylish, white canvas ballet pumps. This look embodied the essence of Tutu Tuesday - fun, flirty, and effortlessly elegant.

First on the itinerary was a stroll along the famed Broadstairs promenade. I loved watching families enjoy ice cream, soaking up the sunshine, and marveling at the intricate chalk drawings that adorned the promenade's pathway. I felt a touch of inspiration myself, and for a fleeting moment, I considered unleashing my inner artist and contributing a graceful ballet dancer in full tutu attire, but decided against it, for fear of my artistic prowess letting me down.

The charming shops lining the promenade were irresistible to my fashion-conscious soul. From vintage boutiques boasting an array of retro finds to independent shops overflowing with beautiful artisan jewellery, each window was a delightful glimpse into Broadstairs' unique style. I couldn't resist picking up a few treasures – a hand-painted silk scarf, an intricate pearl necklace, and a dainty, seashell-themed ring that perfectly complemented my tutu. It's a good job I love a voluminous tote bag!

Lunch was a leisurely affair at one of the harbour-side restaurants, a sun-drenched haven where the salty air carried the aroma of fresh seafood. I indulged in a light, delicious salad, while marveling at the yachts bobbing gently in the harbour and soaking up the warm, afternoon sun. Of course, my tutu stayed firmly in place throughout the meal - a ballerina's dining experience, you could say! And believe me, the combination of light and fluffy tutu fabric with delicious seafood was a match made in fashion heaven. (Perhaps I should write a fashion column on 'Tutu Dining'? It could be the next big trend - or perhaps not.)

Afternoon tea at a quaint tearoom nestled amongst the charming streets was an absolute must. The walls were adorned with dainty floral patterns, and the air was filled with the intoxicating aroma of freshly baked cakes and fragrant tea. I opted for a delicate finger sandwich, a fluffy scone slathered in clotted cream and jam, and a delightful pot of Earl Grey. This, I discovered, was the ideal environment for taking photos of my Tutu Tuesday ensemble. The picturesque surroundings lent themselves perfectly to a backdrop for some whimsical photos, especially when juxtaposed with the fluffy white lace of my tutu. As the sun began to set, painting the sky in vibrant hues of orange and purple, I made my way back to the promenade. I felt a touch of melancholy as the day drew to a close. But I knew I'd carry with me the memories of a beautiful day, filled with joy, inspiration, and a little bit of tutu magic.

Before leaving Broadstairs, I paid a visit to the town's famed Dickens House Museum. I had a delightful time imagining Charles Dickens at his desk, crafting the unforgettable stories that would one day become classics of English literature. I could almost feel the ghostly presence of Little Nell, the Artful Dodger, and the charming characters that continue to captivate generations of readers. And who wouldn't want a photo in front of Dickens House Museum wearing a voluminous ballerina tutu? Not me.

Now, I understand that the sheer elegance of a tutu and its delicate construction make it impractical for everyday wear, especially in a bustling environment like a coastal town. However, the magic of a tutu goes beyond functionality; it is about the confidence, the joy, the whimsy, and the sense of playfulness that it evokes. It's about embracing your inner ballerina, even if you only wear the garment for a day.

As the day concluded, I knew that the experience was one I'd cherish. I'd found inspiration in the beauty of Broadstairs, a sense of wonder in the playful joy of Tutu Tuesday, and a deep appreciation for the sheer magic of a well-crafted tutu. Until next time, fellow twirlers, keep spreading the Tutu Tuesday love, and embrace the opportunity to twirl your way into a world of elegance, joy, and timeless beauty.

Some thoughts on tutus

To date, I've tried numerous tutu styles. There are so many options, but it’s the style of tutu which makes it the ideal outfit for Tutu Tuesday.

  • The classic ballet tutu: This tutu has layers upon layers of tulle, a tiered, shorter, construction. This is my go-to. So airy and dreamy it embodies tutu spirit.
  • The romantic tutu: This one features a flowing, longer skirt made of soft tulle, perfect for swirling and twirling. There’s just something about this tutu that inspires me to put my ballet skills to the test. Maybe this is the day for a ballet on the beach. But I am not sure the seaside would suit a ballet routine, maybe a picnic? I can twirl with a basket in tow!
  • The contemporary tutu: This is perfect for those who seek a modern take on a classic garment. Usually, a more structured and streamlined style, offering a clean and crisp silhouette, often adorned with unique fabrics.

My personal favourite is the traditional, full ballerina tutu for its elegance and flow.

I have a confession, though. One tutu that I'm particularly keen on experimenting with is a black tulle tutu adorned with glitter. I think it could make a statement, with a more fashion-forward edge. It’s perfect for a night out.

But remember: A Tutu is like an outfit for your personality - it’s up to you to express your own unique flair. Find the tutu that embodies you best! #Tututuesday is all about personal expression.

Next week we’re going to Southend, so stay tuned, I’m sure I can find a tutu that is beachside chic!
