Tutu Tuesday in Hampstead: A Dance Through the Streets

It's Tuesday, which means it's time for my favourite weekly ritual: Tutu Tuesday! Hampstead is known for its charming cobbled streets, picturesque parks and, yes, its ballet scene. So, it's the perfect backdrop for my tutu adventures.

Now, I know what you're thinking: tutus, on the street, really? And yes, it does take a certain level of confidence (and a dash of "don't care" attitude) to pull it off. But for me, there's nothing quite like the freedom of expressing myself through dance – and a tutu is the perfect garment for that.

For today's outing, I opted for a classic, romantic, Romantic tutu – the one with layers and layers of soft tulle that give that airy, floating effect. It's a real crowd-pleaser, and today's performance location was perfect for this delicate, whimsical style: Hampstead Heath.

It's a place where nature reigns, where towering trees and sweeping views paint a breathtaking canvas. The vibrant autumn colours created the perfect setting for my ballet. I could hear whispers of admiration from park-goers, and their appreciative smiles fuelled my dance. A dog even did a little tail wag as I spun in a graceful pirouette. A ballerina doesn't need a stage, right?

But don't think for a second that Tutu Tuesday is all about classic tulle. We have options galore – there's the powerful, contemporary tutu. This style ditches the flowing layers in favor of clean lines and sharp cuts, creating a striking visual that screams boldness and athleticism. Imagine a geometric shape paired with black fishnets for an edgier take.

Of course, there's also the sassy, mischievous Spanish tutu – a shorter, more dramatic tutu with an embroidered, almost gypsy-like, feel. This style embraces the flamboyant and playful, which means more twirling and footwork, more flair and attitude. I've always wanted to try it in front of the Royal Free Hospital's grand facade – the Victorian architecture is almost meant for Spanish-style moves.

One of my favourite elements of Tutu Tuesday is the community it fosters. In this corner of Hampstead, we have a growing band of Tutu Tuesday devotees – people who get the sheer joy of twirling, skipping and expressing themselves on a Tuesday morning. We’re not all dancers, no. Some have never stepped on pointe shoes, and yet they get involved. We are all different, united by a love of movement and self-expression, creating our own unique "tutu story".

A gentleman passing me with his shopping this morning said, “ You have really brightened my day”. It reminded me of why I keep coming back to this unique ritual, to bring joy and surprise to the everyday. A tutu can be seen as a silly notion – a reminder that life is short, why take everything so seriously? I dare you to wear it out. See what happens, you just might find a little joy in a twirl, and who knows, perhaps #tututuesday might inspire others to do the same.

So, what is your #tututuesday style?

  • Classically elegant? Go for a traditional, soft tulle tutu.
  • Bold and fearless? Try a contemporary tutu.
  • Free-spirited and playful? Unleash your inner flapper with a sassy Spanish tutu.

The beauty of Tutu Tuesday is that there are no rules. It’s about embracing your inner ballerina, your unique style, and spreading a little joy, a little magic wherever you go. Remember: every day can be a Tutu Tuesday! It’s about choosing happiness, finding joy in the simple things, and, yes, sometimes twirling like nobody’s watching. Let's reclaim the fun of dancing.
