Tutu Tuesday in Wrexham

It's #tututuesday, and Wrexham is a-twirl! This week, I decided to switch up my usual dance class for something a little...extra. So, I gathered my fellow tutu enthusiasts and took our fabulous frocks out for a spin around town. You see, while my heart lies on the ballet stage, every now and then you've got to take that passion to the streets! Wrexham's been experiencing a bit of a creative boom lately, and I've noticed a growing sense of community here. It seemed only fitting to unleash a little bit of tutu magic and sprinkle some pirouettes into this already charming place.

Before I let you in on our whirlwind of twirls, a quick word on the tutu itself. This delicate masterpiece, by the way, is a classic 'Romantic' tutu, made with tiers and tiers of soft tulle. I love its dreamy feel; it almost whispers a romantic fairytale when you spin! As for colour, I chose a delicate shade of rose - a subtle nod to the beauty and elegance that is synonymous with this wonderful town.

Now, onto the day itself. We gathered in the morning at The Grosvenor, Wrexham’s favourite independent cafe. Oh, it’s a gem! Picture this: coffee cups clinking, stories being shared, and a hint of tutus peeking out from under our coats! We chatted and enjoyed the warmth of the place – just a group of girls enjoying each other’s company in a quaint little cafe.

First stop, the town’s iconic St Giles’ Parish Church! Built in the 16th century, this historical monument oozes character and stood witness to our tutu magic. Its ancient stones and architectural beauty made an incredible backdrop for a few playful poses, with our twirls adding an extra bit of contemporary flavour.

Next up, a trip to the award-winning Tŷ Pawb arts centre. You see, the heart of every dancer lives in an artistic spirit and a vibrant town like Wrexham makes our artistic souls sing! As we stepped into the art centre, its buzzing energy was contagious. From colourful murals on the walls to inspiring art exhibitions and creative workshops, it truly reflected Wrexham’s vibrant arts scene.

There were some serious giggles when we entered the ‘Art at Your Door’ workshop, where children and adults were given the chance to try out various artistic mediums! We managed to sneak in a few fun poses against the backdrop of the colourful canvases and murals. The workshop itself felt so inclusive and joyful; just a beautiful reflection of the community spirit that Wrexham is known for.

Of course, no trip to Wrexham is complete without a visit to its enchanting Guildhall, an Elizabethan marvel of a building! Our visit was perfect; it’s so incredibly historical. We felt as if we'd been transported back in time, twirling our tutus amidst ancient beams and intricate stone carvings. Our tutued silhouette against the backdrop of its imposing structure felt particularly poignant, with our tutu ballet providing a juxtaposition against the grand old Guildhall’s rich past.

We capped off our little Wrexham adventure with an indulgent afternoon tea at The Fat Boar in the heart of the town. This charming cafe with its exposed beams and cosy atmosphere provided the perfect spot to unwind and savour freshly brewed teas and mouthwatering cakes. While the food was scrumptious, what truly made it a memory to cherish was the laughter we shared with friends amidst the fairytale charm of Wrexham.

What I found particularly charming is that as we made our way through the day, locals weren’t surprised at all. It was just so Wrexham! A town that embraces art, creativity, and a bit of a whimsy in every day. In fact, a number of people started getting in on the action. We had passersby, shops, café owners — even a busker — participate with genuine smiles and a willingness to be playful. And that, folks, is what made this #tututuesday so incredibly special.

But before I leave you to dream of your own tutu escapades, I want to share my reflections on our Wrexham adventure.

Wrexham's tutu take-aways
  • Wrexham's charm lies in its embrace of individuality, its warmth towards everyone, and its growing community spirit.
  • The creative buzz here makes you feel inspired and like anything is possible. If there is one message to take home from our day out, it is to always go out and dance – whether in the streets or the stage – and embrace every chance you get to add your unique flavour to your community.
  • It's important to wear what makes you feel confident, embrace the joy, and bring a bit of whimsy to every day!
