Tutu Tuesday in Le Havre, Normandie, France #tututuesday

G’day from Le Havre, Normandie! This gorgeous French port city has stolen my heart, not only with its history and charm but also with its love of ballet! It seems I’m not the only one with a soft spot for tutus here - the French know a thing or two about elegance and style. Today is a special day in Le Havre: **Tutu Tuesday!**

Now, I wouldn’t normally be one to rock a full-on classic tutu on the street (though I’ve totally worn them to the market, no judging!), but today’s Tutu Tuesday vibes are a little different. There’s a playful twist in the air, with all sorts of fun interpretations of the traditional tutu, and I’m totally loving the street-style tutus!

It all started with a local ballet company in Le Havre - I’m guessing you haven’t heard of them because they’re more known for their traditional repertoire, which makes their initiative even more fun and refreshing. The Le Havre Ballet Company decided to bring the tutu out of the studio and into the city streets. It's brilliant marketing and I reckon the whole city’s embracing it. Every corner I turn, there’s a little ballerina popping out, a fringe tutu peeking out from under a chic blazer, and even some dudes sporting tutu-inspired outfits! The French have a real knack for finding that perfect balance between fashion and fun.

For Tutu Tuesday, Le Havre has turned into a playground of twirls and grace! Here are some of my favourite looks I spotted:

  • A young girl with a pink tulle tutu paired with a grey cardigan. It’s like the classic ballet school look, but she gave it a little extra pizazz with a pair of hot pink converse!
  • I saw this bloke wearing a long denim skirt with a white cotton bodice top. He added a playful touch with a bright red tutu tucked beneath the denim. It looked like a modern-day pirate outfit, all about that bold flair.
  • A middle-aged woman strutting down the street in a classic black dress and a fluffy white tutu wrapped around her waist like a belt! So elegant and unique!
  • A group of young men were wearing black T-shirts with “Le Havre Ballet Company” written in sparkly silver font. I almost missed it at first, then noticed they’d created their own versions of tutus by attaching scraps of fabric to the backs of their shirts, like whimsical butterfly wings!

I love that everyone here is embracing their inner ballerina, and everyone looks like they're having a ball. There’s a real air of excitement in the city streets! It's just another example of why Le Havre is such an inspiring and culturally rich place.

The event brought a new dimension to street-style fashion, inspiring everyone from young girls to seasoned fashionistas, men and women, to showcase their individual style and connect with the world of dance in their own creative ways. I’m guessing it’s inspired by some recent street-style events in other countries, like the #tututimes movement in Tokyo and the #tutustory trend in New York. But let’s face it - the French know how to make things their own. The Le Havre twist has that je ne sais quoi !

But here's the real beauty of Tutu Tuesday: it's not just about the outfits! This day feels like a giant celebration of artistry and creative expression in all forms. People are embracing dancing in the streets, singing, and letting loose like they’ve just finished an encore on stage. There are a whole lot of local musicians and dancers in the streets performing impromptu concerts for passers-by.

The ballet world in Le Havre seems to have really captured the spirit of artistic expression with its own style! It feels like a movement taking root and I couldn't be more stoked to witness it unfold!

There are two more events for Tutu Tuesday in the upcoming months - one during the summer festival, which is sure to be amazing, and one for National Ballet Week in October. I'll be sure to keep you posted! In the meantime, I reckon Tutu Tuesday will definitely be the new French fashion craze for 2023.
