Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory, #tututuesday

G’day, dance lovers! It’s your girl, Tilly, back again with another Tutu Tuesday. This time, I'm taking Tutu Tuesday all the way to the tropical paradise of Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory! Yeah, you heard that right, even here in the Outback, tutus are ruling. Forget your dusty old outback boots, babes, it’s time to break out your tulle and embrace the magic.

Nhulunbuy is this beautiful coastal town tucked away in the Northern Territory. You wouldn’t think it, right? But this town is full of creative energy and I've been wanting to share my passion for ballet and fashion with these legends for ages. And let me tell you, these babes have got a serious flair for the dramatic, just like me!

This Tuesday was a wild whirlwind of tutus, laughter, and seriously, some next-level creativity. We started the morning at the local community centre, which transformed into a Tutu Transformation Station for the day. There was an absolute explosion of colours, textures, and tulle. We had everything from the classic romantic tulle tutu - like the ones you’d see in Swan Lake or Sleeping Beauty - to the more contemporary “whimsical" styles with a whole lot of fringing, layering and some totally bonkers fabrics that would make the best designers weep.

But it wasn’t just about the tutus themselves. It was about letting go of any doubts or insecurities we had about wearing these incredibly extravagant things. Imagine rocking a full-on, puffy tutu, in your every day. That’s pretty daring, even for a dance pro like me. But that's the magic of Tutu Tuesday – it allows you to tap into your inner ballerina and embrace all that playful, joyous energy. The kids who were there had no hesitation about jumping in and feeling their absolute best! Seriously, it was the best part of the day. Seeing the joy in these little legends’ faces was just... so freaking magical.

The highlights? Let's see. We had a group of gorgeous Aboriginal teens doing a totally original choreo in their hand-made tutus. Can you imagine? This local artisan taught them how to weave eucalyptus leaves and feathers into this breathtaking contemporary masterpiece. And you know what? It absolutely smashed any preconceived notions of what "ballet" should be. We need more of this in Australian ballet, just sayin’.

Then there was this absolutely hilarious group of dudes in a local Aussie Rules team totally rocking the “Blokes in Tutus” style, they were a mix of traditional “tutu” with some truly bizarre, hand-sewn modifications and custom-made, quirky Aussie inspired additions. Imagine a tutu paired with a pair of jocks and an Aussie flag. Yeah. That's some serious sartorial courage for you! We got so many photos with the guys. They're hilarious. The blokes had to go and play a game soon after – no chance I'd be stopping them. The thought of an entire football team rocking tulle during game time
that's definitely Tutu Tuesday goals, don’t you think?

The other incredible aspect of the day? This awesome young lady who just rocked up in a stunning tutu with some killer glitter. Turns out, she’s the lead designer for the upcoming Indigenous Art Festival in Nhulunbuy, and she had an absolute brainstorm after our #tututuesday post popped up on Insta. The Festival's taking on a "tribal-ballet" theme, which is completely genius – incorporating contemporary fashion and the cultural art scene in a uniquely Australian way.

My fav? The “Reclaimed Tulle" section where a group of women were working with discarded tulle from local ballet classes to make a series of art installations! We also got local primary schoolers in with some truly inventive and colourful creations. They looked absolutely beautiful. We had kids in their regular clothes, school uniforms, the whole shebang, everyone totally loving the whole day, embracing all things tutu.

The thing is, it’s not about the perfect pose or even knowing how to do a grand jetĂ©. It’s about expressing yourself and celebrating creativity, and doing so with a big smile. Nhulunbuy was a totally perfect spot for Tutu Tuesday. These legends are serious about fashion and breaking norms, and they made this whole day so incredibly unique.

If you ever find yourself in this beautiful, beautiful part of Australia, make sure to drop by Nhulunbuy and join in on the tutu-themed fun. Who knows? Maybe it'll inspire you to unleash your inner ballerina. You just might find yourself feeling a little bit fabulous and a whole lot free.
