Gembrook, Victoria: Tutu Tuesday Takes Over the Town

It’s a well-known fact – we Australians are all about a good time. But we’re also not afraid to put on a good show, especially when it comes to embracing our inner ballerina. So when #Tututuesday rolled around this week, the sleepy little town of Gembrook, Victoria was positively buzzing with a whole lot of tulle.

For those of you who don’t know (but seriously, where have you been?), #Tututuesday is a weekly celebration of all things ballet. It’s a chance to ditch the denim and don a fabulous tutu, embracing the grace, beauty, and – let’s be honest – the undeniable charm of a perfectly-pirouetted frock. And boy, did the people of Gembrook turn out in force!

From the seasoned ballet dancer (there’s quite a few here, you know!) to the absolute novice who just wants to get a taste of the good times, there was a tutu for everyone. We saw some stunning examples of the classics, like the romantic and dreamy white romantic tutu, the traditional pancake tutu, and even a few elaborate, multi-layered versions that had the locals doing double takes.

But this wasn’t just a showcase of classic ballet wear. The folks at Gembrook were not afraid to get creative. There were funky tutu-inspired ensembles – think sequin-laden tops, tulle skirts, and bold, colourful combinations – all styled with a delightful disregard for tradition. And who could resist a chuckle at the sight of some hilarious tutus with novelty motifs: think Australian flags, kangaroos, and even a couple of cheeky koalas.

It was such a joy to see the town transformed for a day – people in every shop, cafes packed to the rafters, and a feeling of infectious joy floating through the air. It wasn’t just about the tutus, although those were a sight to behold. It was the way people embraced the day – the laughter, the smiles, the friendly banter, and the pure fun of a community coming together in a common love for something special.

As a professional dancer who's worked hard to keep ballet alive and thriving in Australia, I can’t help but feel proud of what we accomplished on #Tututuesday. Seeing Gembrook embrace the spirit of ballet, however they choose to express it, reminded me why we dance. It’s about bringing joy to ourselves and others, about expressing our creativity and our passion, and about coming together as a community to share a love for something truly unique and wonderful.

Gembrook, you truly embraced #Tututuesday. You are a reminder to us all – it’s not about perfection, or a rigid definition of what “ballet” should be. It's about embracing our love for art and celebrating it with boundless energy. It’s about having fun, looking good, and spreading the love. Gembrook, you have a lot to be proud of – your tutus, your smiles, and your commitment to keeping the spirit of ballet alive.

For those of you reading this, if you’re thinking “that’s so much fun, I want in!” there’s a chance #Tututuesday is coming to your town too. Find your community, embrace the spirit, and put on a tutu!

A Quick #Tututuesday Fashion Guide For My Fellow Fashionistas

So you've been inspired and want to get your own #Tututuesday look ready? Here's a quick fashion guide to get you started. Think of it as my own little tutus for thought:

  • Classic vs. Chic: Don't underestimate the timeless elegance of the classic, multi-layered tutu. Or, for a more contemporary feel, go for a shorter, single-layer tutu, or even a simple, flirty tulle skirt. Embrace whatever resonates with you!
  • Colour Combinations: Play with colour combinations and textures to find your perfect match. A black or navy tutu is versatile and elegant, while a bold red or emerald green can make a statement. You could even try pairing your tutu with a contrasting colour top to create a unique and visually stunning outfit.
  • Accessories are your best friend: Add personality to your tutu with statement jewellery or bold headwear. Embrace some Aussie charm – think floral headbands, earrings with kookaburra motifs, and don’t forget those quirky pins! Don't shy away from going all out – the more eye-catching, the better.
  • Shoes and Bags: Pair your tutu with cute flats, chunky sneakers, or heels to elevate your ensemble. Embrace comfy footwear if you want to dance the day away. Don't forget to complete the look with a quirky bag – consider a mini backpack or even a whimsical, fabric tote.

Remember, the key to rocking your #Tututuesday look is to feel confident, fabulous, and ready to embrace the magic of ballet!
