Tutu Tuesday in Branxton, New South Wales: #tututuesday
Hey dance lovers! It's your girl, Olivia, here from the heart of Branxton, New South Wales, where the sun is always shining and the air is alive with the whispers of dance. We might be a small town, but we have a big heart for ballet. It's my passion and the thing I absolutely live for, but the journey of becoming a dancer has led me to some fun things, including, you guessed it...Tutu Tuesdays.
So, let's get straight to it! Today is Tuesday, and it’s about time we take a moment to appreciate the quintessential symbol of a ballerina's world – the Tutu. This is where I get to put on my fashion hat. We all love a classic Romantic tutu; it’s beautiful and classic. Think about a single-layered soft net tutu and those long layers just billowing out. You can see them in the most famous ballet stories; it's what you'd see in a production of *Swan Lake* or a *Giselle* ballet. And those Romantic Tutus, wow, they can be even more dreamy with a double or triple layered tutu. It’s truly captivating to see a dancer soaring in one. But you've got to remember there are lots of different types. There's the bell shape that flows down for that *la danseuse* ballerina effect – like a *Don Quixote* style of ballet and a short, tight-fitting tutus; they make dancers feel powerful!
Tutu Tuesday here in Branxton is more than just putting on a fluffy dress and taking some photos. It's a chance for the local dancers to get together, dance a little, and inspire others in a place that doesn’t have a dedicated dance studio. We dance at the Community Center in Branxton. It’s always packed out. Everyone in town loves Tutu Tuesday. It's a fantastic way for a diverse bunch of us to come together; some are aspiring dancers while others love to see us perform. The best part? We’re supporting local businesses. All those little bakeries in town are great and often we’re making donations. You see so many smiles all around, especially as it's a community day where local shops are encouraged to create tutu themed cakes. It’s crazy – think cakes that look like dancers, cakes decorated with pink icing and little tulle swirls, even mini Tutus made out of icing, or frosting! You could be having the best little cupcake ever. You can't leave without one, and we never do!
  • Now, what exactly are my top tips for your perfect Tutu Tuesday?

  • Embrace the Tutu: It’s time to be playful, wear it, strut your stuff – you look amazing!

  • Mix and match colours: From classic black to soft pastels to shimmering jewel tones – feel free to get creative. You can go bright pink! Even neon! This is not about following a dress code, it’s a creative, fun celebration! You’ll look smashing, regardless.

  • Accessories, Accessories, Accessories: I love me a bit of glitz and glamour. I'm a dancer, it's who I am. Feel free to rock sparkly hair pins, statement earrings, maybe even some floral headbands! This is about unleashing your creative energy. Go crazy with colour – the more colour, the better, honestly, it's a beautiful thing.

  • Bring a friend or three: The more, the merrier! Invite your mates to join. What could be better than sharing a laugh and spreading a little tutu magic?

  • Don't forget your phone: Capture those amazing moments with pictures and videos! I love sharing pictures of Tutu Tuesday. It’s not just about dancing, but the community we are a part of.

  • And last but not least, a tutu story: The one that always gets everyone laughing is the time when I first got on stage in the small theater here. I was young, it was a local dance school’s recital. I remember feeling proud to be wearing this big bright pink tutu, the biggest and fullest I had ever worn – well, you've got to make a statement, right? What I didn’t realise, was that while we practiced my costume was great; when it got on the stage in the performance, it had just lost it's puffiness and was almost a deflated ball of tulle… Not quite a professional costume moment but it's fun to remember because there are many funny things that happen on the journey of a ballet dancer, whether that is backstage at a big theatre in Sydney, or here in the community center!

  • If you find yourself in Branxton on a Tuesday, you can bet there will be a flurry of pink and blue, glittery fun, and smiles from the dancers. You just might find your inner ballerina, too. And maybe we'll share a cuppa! And of course, if you have your own fun Tutu Tuesday, please share them with me, hashtag #tututuesday!
