Tutu Tuesday in Ulverstone, Tasmania: A Whirlwind of Frills and Feathers

Hey dance lovers! It’s your girl, Amelia here, back with another dose of dance-fuelled fashion. Today, we’re venturing to the beautiful seaside town of Ulverstone, Tasmania for a Tutu Tuesday extravaganza. Let me tell you, it’s a little piece of heaven for a tutu enthusiast like me. From the moment I stepped off the bus, the air was buzzing with a vibrant energy that’s impossible to ignore, and you can feel the love for all things dance – particularly the beloved tutu.

Now, for those unfamiliar with the majesty that is the tutu, let me give you a crash course. For decades, this essential garment has taken on a plethora of forms. Think classic Romantic, where we're talking layers of tulle in dreamy shades like white, ivory, and even pale pink. These ballerinas look ethereal. But let’s not forget those iconic tutus of the neo-classical era, where intricate designs take the stage, embracing shapes like a trapezoid or bell shape, and even a mix of colours. And we can’t forget those more modern variations, which tend to be more playful with contemporary cuts, a variety of textures, and even those unexpected asymmetric styles.

Ulverstone has an undeniable passion for dance. I felt it instantly! It seems the local dance schools are brimming with talent, and the annual dance festival draws performers from across Tasmania – it’s truly inspiring! So it makes sense that this town is a hub for all things Tutu. And Tutu Tuesday – you know, our chance to revel in all things tutu, every second Tuesday – was the perfect excuse for me to explore this vibrant little corner of the country and meet the locals.

Where do I begin? As I meandered through Ulverstone’s main streets, my eyes were practically popping out of their sockets! I discovered a wonderland of tutu delights – there’s even a store here dedicated entirely to the frills and feathers, "The Tutu Boutique," just a hop skip and a jump from the local ballet studio.

At The Tutu Boutique, you’re spoilt for choice – literally. We’re talking all kinds of tutus – fluffy classical, those chic, almost architectural neoclassical ones – you name it, they've got it. And let's not forget the beautiful range of dance wear and shoes! It was almost enough to make a tutu-loving girl weep. (Almost.)

Now, what’s a Tutu Tuesday without a dose of tea? Thankfully, I found a truly delightful cafe right around the corner – "The Peppermint Teacup." This place had it all - amazing chai lattes, pastries so good you'd swear they'd been blessed by the fairies, and a lovely warm vibe. While I sipped my brew, I spent some time observing the other guests – so many tutu-loving locals – they even had tutus on display – oh what a lovely community. I felt right at home!

In the afternoon, I found myself attending the local Ballet class – how could I resist? The studio itself was so well equipped with dance floors, mirrors, barres and even a cute little cafe section! Talk about inspiration overload. The class, with a small group of enthusiastic dancers – I just had to join in! – was so refreshing and energetic. It reminded me just why we love to dance and, why it’s so great to explore dance culture in different parts of Australia!

I think Ulverstone is one of the places to visit in Australia to connect with the local dance culture and let's face it, to celebrate the humble Tutu! The dance scene is thriving, and it's no wonder! And while you're at it, check out the #tututuesday trend on social media - let’s get all our tutu lovers showing off their awesome creations and stories!

Before I left Ulverstone, I made sure I bought a little something to take home with me from "The Tutu Boutique." (Shhhh… a bright fuchsia neoclassical style with an awesome ruffle, but you didn’t hear that from me!).

If you're planning a trip to Tasmania anytime soon, Ulverstone needs to be on your list. It's the ultimate place to explore all things dance, enjoy delicious food, soak in the charming atmosphere – oh, and of course – to indulge in some amazing Tutu Tuesday style!
