Tutu Tuesday in Mareeba, Queensland: A Whirlwind of Romance and Style

Itā€™s Tuesday, which means itā€™s time for my weekly dose of tutu inspiration! Iā€™ve been meaning to share some insights about tutu trends happening in Australiaā€™s ballet scene, particularly here in the heart of Far North Queensland - Mareeba. You might not think of tutu culture as a huge deal here, but trust me, there's a lot going on! This week, Iā€™m all about the romance. I recently stumbled across a gorgeous online boutique that sells tutu-inspired outfits for the modern, fashionable dancer. Theyā€™ve got this amazing collection called ā€œThe Romantic,ā€ featuring all sorts of gorgeous styles in dreamy pastel hues - perfect for channeling your inner ballerina while sipping tea in the afternoon or strutting through the local market. The flowing skirts and delicate lace evoke the grace and elegance of traditional tutus but with a more whimsical, everyday touch.

Speaking of traditional tutus, the classic Romantic tutu is timeless! The layers of tulle that sweep around the body never go out of style. Think Sarah Bernhardt - she owned that romantic aesthetic! Here in Mareeba, our local dance studio - "Studio Moves" - is currently preparing for their end-of-year recital, and theyā€™re showcasing a ballet piece with several traditional Romantic tutus, complete with the classic pancake bun hairstyle. Iā€™m definitely going to try and snag some shots of them during their rehearsals - there's nothing more captivating than watching those delicate tulle layers swirl in motion!

But it's not all about the traditional styles, right? In Mareeba, weā€™ve been seeing a resurgence of ā€œwhimsical tutuā€ trends. Think about your childhood days - you probably wore a sparkly tutu at some point! They've re-emerged as the ultimate dance party essential, making a statement on social media, especially on our favourite #Tututuesday hashtag. From metallic shades to neon hues - these are more about embracing fun and personal style. One of my favourite local boutique shops, "Sugar & Spice", actually stocked some of the cutest little "sparkly tutu skirts" the other day, I couldn't resist grabbing a couple to mix and match with my own tutu-inspired outfit for a birthday party I'm attending later this month.

Now, when it comes to tutu-style inspiration, I can't forget about my favourite source - Australian Ballet dancers. I've been fortunate to have caught a couple of their recent performances in Townsville and Cairns, and I'm just amazed at the artistic ingenuity with tutus these days. Thereā€™s a mix of everything - bold statement tutus, minimalist designs, even reconstructed pieces! One particular piece called ā€œSwan Lakeā€ (that I just had to watch twice!), used delicate, almost ethereal-looking white tutus that evoked the fragility of the swans, yet there was a powerful message of grace and strength that was captivating.

In a nutshell, here in Mareeba, it's a Tutu Tuesday revolution! From traditional to whimsical, every dance studio, every local event is embracing the spirit of tutus. What about you? Where are you rocking your Tutu Tuesdays? Do share your looks on social media, and donā€™t forget to tag us - #tututuesday - and show the world how weā€™re redefining the tutus and ballet scene in Mareeba, Queensland, and Australia. We'd love to see what you've got.

Some of my favourite Tutu styles for 2023

  • The Romantic Tutu: It's the classic for a reason, darling. That cascading tulle? So divine!
  • The Whimsical Tutu: Fun and flirty - think sparkle and colour for those statement moments.
  • The Statement Tutu: For those who dare! I'm talking daring cuts and dramatic fabrics.

How do you express your #tututuesday?
