Tutu Tuesday in Wynyard, Tasmania: A Ballet-Inspired Fashion Fiesta!

G'day fellow fashionistas and tutu enthusiasts! It's your girl, Mia, back with another blog post from the sunny shores of Tassie. I know you're probably wondering why I'm even mentioning tutus, let alone declaring a whole Tuesday in their honor. Well, let me tell you, there's a special something about the tutu that transcends the stage. It's a statement piece that speaks to the inner ballerina in all of us, regardless of whether we can actually turn out our feet or even know the difference between a bourrée and a chassé.

Today's #TutTuesday is a bit special, however. Because guess where I am? That's right, I'm in the heart of Wynyard, Tasmania, a town steeped in history, beauty, and dare I say, a hint of tut-tastic spirit! Now, I know what you're thinking: "Mia, you're in Wynyard? What's so tutu-licious about this place? Isn't it known for apples and cheese, not fashion?"

Well, friends, it's all about embracing the unexpected. While Wynyard might not have a Broadway or a Bolshoi, the locals are secretly a stylish bunch with an undeniable flair for the theatrical. This week, as part of their annual Arts & Culture Festival, Wynyard decided to embrace its inner ballerina. They called it a "Tutu Takeover," and let me tell you, this little town truly stepped up their fashion game.

The first stop on my Tutu Takeover tour was at the Wynyard Art Gallery, where a display of tutu-inspired artworks were on show. Imagine Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” but with tulle replacing the night sky, or Picasso’s “Guernica” reimagined with vibrant, swirling tutus. They had it all, from the dramatic black swans of a modern interpretation of “Swan Lake” to whimsical fairy tutus bursting with vibrant hues. There was even a delightful exhibition about the history of the tutu itself, featuring everything from the first layered skirts of the 19th century to the streamlined, athletic styles of today. The curator told me how a single tutu could require up to 400 yards of tulle! Imagine!

Next up, I made my way to the heart of the town square where the Tutu Marketplace was buzzing with activity. This wasn't just about tutus; it was about creating a little community for those who love to embrace the tutu's joyful spirit. We saw everything from the traditional, romantic-style ballet tutu, the quintessential pointe shoes and ballet slippers to DIY tutu kits, with tulle in a million colors that made you want to grab a pair of scissors and start whipping something up yourself.

There were a few vendors who took things to the next level with custom designs. One woman had this incredible selection of handmade tutus in eye-catching designs - she called them "tutu-wearable art!" It was seriously next-level: feathers, sequins, and even a bit of that eco-conscious upcycled tulle I’m seeing more and more of these days. The vibe was super cool and everyone was just embracing the spirit of playfulness.

Now, I can't talk about a #tutuesday event without mentioning food, and the local café, The Nutmeg Nook, had a "tutu-tastic" special on offer - their "Sugarplum" milkshake topped with whipped cream and a pink tutu-shaped marshmallow. I'm not sure what was more tutu-tastic: the delicious milkshake or the way it made me feel like a kid again, twirling in the cafe, tu-tu in tow.

In the afternoon, the Wynyard Performing Arts Center transformed itself into a "Tutu Tea Party," hosted by the local dance studio, “The Wynyard Ballerinas.” With dainty teas and scones, they served up a truly inspiring experience with guest speakers from Australia's world of ballet. The highlight, though, was a delightful performance by the junior ballet classes – I literally shed a happy tear seeing them all dressed in those tiny tutus, dancing and spinning with so much energy and grace.

And the best part? The #TutTuesday event was for everyone - families, kids, seniors, tourists, even local dogs (who looked totally adorable with their doggy-sized tutus!). There was an undeniable spirit of fun and inclusiveness, proving that tutus are really all about embracing that little bit of whimsicalness within all of us.

So, you're probably wondering, how does Wynyard, a small town in Tasmania, manage to pull off such an amazing tutu-filled day? It’s all about community, the dedication of passionate locals, and a shared love of the joy and magic that tutus inspire. I came to Wynyard looking to see if there was some secret to tutu magic and what I found is much more profound: a testament to a community spirit, embracing their own little slice of creativity. And yes, you better believe that I snapped some #tutuesday worthy shots for the gram. It wouldn’t be #tutuesday without a little #ootd, and, of course, the hashtag #WynyardTasmania. So stay tuned!
