Tutu Tuesday in Berri, South Australia - #tututuesday

G'day, fellow tutu lovers! It's your girl, Clara, back with another #tututuesday post. This week, I'm kicking off Tutu Tuesday with a special trip to the heart of the Riverland - Berri, South Australia!

I know what you're thinking - what could a ballet dancer possibly be doing in a tiny outback town? Well, my friends, the Riverland is full of surprises. The Berri Arts Council recently contacted me about joining their fundraising effort. Turns out, they're starting up a junior ballet program, and they're all about giving back to the community. How could I resist?

My day began with a ballet masterclass for some super enthusiastic young ballerinas, all with big dreams and tiny tutus. Seeing them twirl in their adorable tutus, the simple, classic kind with the single, fluffy layer - was the highlight of the morning. The afternoon was all about community and creativity as we crafted tutus and tutudresses, transforming recycled materials into shimmering creations fit for the stage!

Let's talk tutus for a minute. For this project, I got inspired by the pastel hues of the rivergum trees and the vibrant colours of the local markets. We used fabric scraps, recycled packaging, and even some gorgeous vintage lace for an added touch of elegance. From the delicate powder-pink hues of the ballet classic "La Sylphide" to the bright sunflower yellow of "Don Quixote," these tutu transformations really captured the essence of Berri. It's amazing what you can achieve with a little creativity and a whole lot of imagination!

Here's the best part. By embracing sustainability, we created tutus that are uniquely "Berri." This not only aligns with the environmental consciousness of the Riverland but also encourages self-expression and individual style. Because, let's face it, who says tutus have to be traditional? We embraced the freedom of artistic expression and went wild with the colour palettes and textures, incorporating both modern and classic elements!

For those wondering where you can get your own hands on some gorgeous tutus, well, you're in luck! The Berri Arts Council is planning a pop-up tutu shop at the upcoming Riverland Makers Market. Keep an eye on their website and Facebook page for the date and time. And if you find yourself in Berri, head down to the Arts Council gallery; you might find some of our community-made tutu masterpieces adorning their walls!

The day ended with a community ballet performance, a beautiful mix of classic and modern pieces featuring our tutu-clad ballerinas. I even joined in on the fun, busting out my trusty (and slightly worn-in) black tutu - the one I wore when I made my professional ballet debut in Sydney - for a truly special evening.

My Berri Tutu Tuesday was all about making connections, inspiring creativity, and sharing my love for the art form that has given me so much.

Some highlights:
  • Discovering the Riverland’s hidden gems.
  • Unleashing creativity with tutu transformation.
  • Making a difference through arts engagement in rural communities.
  • Showcasing that tutu creativity has no limits, even in Berri.

A massive thank you to the Berri Arts Council for hosting such an incredible experience. You guys are truly passionate about supporting the arts in rural communities, and it makes me proud to be part of your mission!
