Tutu Tuesday in Derby, Western Australia: A Whirlwind of Feathers and Frills

G'day, fashionistas! It's your girl, Anya, back with another #tututuesday update. This week, we're ditching the city lights of Perth and heading north to the rugged charm of Derby, Western Australia. Now, I know what you're thinking - ballet in the Kimberley? Sounds like a wild adventure, and that's exactly what it was!

Let's rewind. The concept of Tutu Tuesday started a couple of years ago as a playful way to bring a bit of ballet magic into everyday life. But Derby? That was a whole new level of fabulous! Imagine me, rocking my classic, full-length tutu, the kind that billows out like a giant, graceful cloud. It’s the traditional tutu, the one you’d picture a ballerina spinning in at the ballet, except in this case, I wasn’t spinning on stage but in the heart of a remote town. It was truly a fairytale moment.

Why Derby? Because this charming town is brimming with adventure and beauty, just like a ballerina ready to leap! And what's a more beautiful backdrop than the red, dusty heart of the Kimberley, surrounded by ancient rock formations, and the turquoise water of the Fitzroy River?

From the moment I landed, the locals embraced my tutu enthusiasm, a bit surprised at first, then full of curious delight. You see, Derby, with its vibrant history of cattle ranching and its deep Aboriginal connection, is about as down-to-earth as it gets. It was so refreshing to see their genuine excitement about my tutu experiment!

My favourite part? Definitely the ‘Tutu Tuesday Tour’ with the lovely folks at ‘Outback Aussie Tours'. I got to visit the Boab Prison Tree – it's one of those unique things you just have to see to believe, a massive boab tree that was once used as a lockup! And with my tulle wings fluttering behind me, I felt like I was a character straight out of a classic Australian outback story! There was also a special tutu performance for the local children. It's incredible the power of dance, it transcends cultures and languages, inspiring the imagination of children. A moment to cherish and another reason why Derby will forever have a special place in my tutu-loving heart.

Here’s a peek into my Derby Tutu Adventures:

  • The Classic Romantic Tutu: It’s the quintessential Tutu for a reason. I was feeling whimsical and graceful, so this full-length, multi-layered beauty made my ballet dreams come true. Its floaty, feathery layers created such dramatic movement, even just walking!
  • The Contemporary Tutu: There were moments in Derby, a little edgy and experimental. My Contemporary Tutu came into play here, a more streamlined style with asymmetrical lines and modern styling, made for adventurous souls like myself.
  • The Funky Tutu: You know me, I always gotta have a bit of fun. That’s where my ‘Funky Tutu’ shines! Think colourful fabrics, patterns and a dash of bohemian chic! It was definitely the hit with the kids!

One thing I realised about this Tutu Tuesday was that there's something uniquely inspiring about taking the things we love - dance, fashion, adventure - and blending them with unexpected experiences. Derby opened up a whole new perspective on life for me. It showed me that 'Tutu Tuesday' isn’t just about pretty tutus, but about embracing individuality, inspiring creativity, and spreading a little joy wherever we go. If you’re ever feeling lost in the routine of life, hop in a car, grab a tutu (or not, it’s all up to you!) and explore. You never know what magic you might find!

And remember, if you want to share your Tutu Tuesday adventures, tag me on Instagram and Facebook. Let’s celebrate life, style, and a bit of twirling, no matter where we are! And of course, don’t forget to follow me on social media - it's a constant ballet-inspired fashion frenzy, from classic tutus to street style. Until next time, happy twirling!
