Tutu Tuesday in Sydney, NSW: #tututuesday

Hey babes! It's your girl, Elle, here, back with another Tuesday and another Tutu Tuesday post. The weather here in Sydney has been glorious, so what better day to talk about twirling than under the Sydney sunshine! If you haven't caught my vibe, every Tuesday I dedicate a whole post to the majestic, twirling, magical garment that is the tutu!

Tutus! Oh, how I love thee. What are they exactly? In a nutshell, the tutu is an iconic piece of attire associated with classical ballet. And this is not a mere understatement! When we see a ballerina in a tutu, we know what's up! We're in the world of ballets, grace, beauty and skill!

Tutus are more than just a piece of costume, they're a symbol of a timeless art form. Here in Sydney, Australia, there's a big tradition of ballet that really has a global audience! And with this tradition comes many, many different styles of tutu, all beautifully designed to make ballet dancers stand out. They're truly pieces of art, just as magical as the dancers who wear them! Here's a rundown of my top picks:

  • The Romantic Tutu. A must-have for a tutu lover! This style is characterized by the way it layers its skirt! It usually features several layers of tulle gathered at the waist and creating a very light and airy skirt. Think Cinderella and Aurora, two of my favourite princesses, and you're practically imagining it!
  • The Classical Tutu. This one is the absolute standard of a ballerina’s outfit, especially when it comes to those classics like "Swan Lake" and "Giselle." Made with more stiff material, the classical tutu typically includes a flat bodice and a round, wide, multi-layered skirt, all creating a big and flowing skirt. You know, big enough to capture the stage!
  • The Modern Tutu. With less tulle layers, the modern tutu comes with its own vibe! We're talking more form-fitting than the traditional ones and often used for more contemporary works! The skirt, oh how they are so unique! It may have a bit more of a relaxed or contemporary cut!

There's definitely a certain charm in the simplicity of a classic tulle tutu, right?! And it is very classic. There are hundreds of tutus with various styles! And the truth is that with every new ballet production and new choreographer, a brand new tutu might be created, just like our contemporary tutu! It's amazing! So it makes sense that the #tututuesday hashtag is booming in the world of ballet. I have never missed a Tuesday with this hashtag! What a magical community it is, too!

This past weekend I went to the "Giselle" ballet, in the Opera House in Sydney. I was able to take photos of the beautiful ballerina, so keep an eye out on my instagram because I'll be posting those pictures of the tutus. Let me tell you: it's no mean feat to wear those tutus! The ballerinas make it look so graceful, but you should try twirling in those - you need strength and stamina! The ladies that can perform with all that gorgeous tulle are superstars! This one’s for all you incredible ballet dancers, whether in training or professionals. You are all stars. Keep on twirling those magical tutus and rocking the stages! You guys are killing it!

In conclusion, it's great to talk about tutu on Tutu Tuesdays and keep the dance world going strong. Here in Sydney, with our vibrant community and heritage, it is truly an inspiring and captivating space. Keep spreading your tutu love with the #tututuesday hashtag. Let's bring more magic to the world!
