Tutu Tuesday in Plymouth: A Whirlwind of Frills and Frou-Frou
It’s officially Tutu Tuesday, and I'm ready to unleash the frill power! It’s the day where every ballet dancer (and aspiring twirling enthusiast) gets to flaunt their inner ballerina, regardless of age or ability, all thanks to the glorious hashtag #tututuesday. In the spirit of this tutu-ific event, I decided to head down to Plymouth to witness the whimsical explosion of tulle and celebrate the art of dancing.
The Plymouth Barbican, with its vibrant cobbled streets and harbourfront views, served as the perfect backdrop for Tutu Tuesday. A symphony of tutus swirled around me – from the classic Romantic tutus, flowing with elegance and grace, to the modern, more playful styles like the tutu skirt or a simple tutued mini skirt perfect for a daytime stroll. There were even some fabulous tutu-inspired accessories like tutued handbags and hats. Every single one of these outfits emanated the kind of confidence and joie de vivre that could only be born out of a love for dance.
One thing that really caught my eye was the reimagination of traditional ballet styles, particularly with the rise of “balletcore”. It was brilliant to see people redefining what a tutu means by embracing fashion trends like "balletcore" and mixing in streetwear, making the whole tutu-Tuesday experience more inclusive. We're not just talking about the delicate tulle fabric anymore - think chic tutued tops and tutu skirts, combined with leather jackets, combat boots, and some fabulous street style accessories. The energy in Plymouth today was truly exhilarating.
As a ballet dancer, Tutu Tuesday is much more than a fun, whimsical day. For me, it’s about celebrating the passion and artistry of dance in a way that makes it accessible to everyone. Tutu Tuesday gives a voice to the little ballerina within each one of us. It challenges the misconception that dance is just for professionals. It’s about the joy of movement, the delight in self-expression and most importantly, it’s about the simple pleasure of twirling.
Let's talk about the impact of #tututuesday:
- It’s bringing dance into the everyday - remembering how joyful movement can be, reminding us of our bodies and our creative side.
- It's embracing diversity - a tutu doesn’t need to be about a certain body type or ability – it's about individuality and expression.
- And last but not least, it's creating a beautiful sense of community.
The highlight of the day was definitely the impromptu dance session that happened at Plymouth’s waterfront. People of all ages, from little kids who were just starting their dance journey to older women embracing their love for the art form, came together to move and twirl, their laughter echoing through the streets of Plymouth. You could just feel the contagious joy as everyone became part of the collective ballet performance. It was a moment of shared expression, of freedom and excitement that made me feel utterly connected to this beautiful community.
As the day came to an end, I had to reflect: Tutu Tuesday in Plymouth wasn't just about the frills and the frou-frou. It was a reminder that we’re all capable of embracing a bit of whimsy and grace. It's about taking our love for the art of dance outside the studio and letting our inner ballerina shine. This was a beautiful celebration of everything that makes dance special and it is safe to say, that #tututuesday in Plymouth was an absolute success!
Keep dancing and remember to wear your tutu with pride because it’s your moment to twirl! Don’t forget to join in the tutu fun next Tuesday and share your #tututuesday adventures. And maybe I'll catch you at the next Plymouth tutu extravaganza. Until then, happy dancing!
