Tutu Tuesday in Wolverhampton: A Celebration of Twirling and #tututuesday

Alright, darlings, gather round! It's Tuesday, which means it's time for the weekly ritual: Tutu Tuesday. Now, I know what you're thinking: "A tutu in Wolverhampton? Is this some kind of ironic fashion statement?" But hold your horses, fashionistas, because I'm here to tell you that Wolverhampton is not just about industrial heritage and black country humour. Oh no, we've got style here, and plenty of it!

Let's talk about tutus. This whimsical garment, traditionally associated with ballet, is much more than a costume. It's a symbol of grace, lightness, and freedom of expression. But here in Wolverhampton, we’re taking it a step further! Think tutus as versatile wardrobe staples, and embrace this iconic symbol of dance and elegance in your own unique style. Forget boring old jeans and t-shirts, let’s step it up. Think a tutu as a statement piece. You'll see women of all ages strutting their stuff in the most unexpected ways!

My own Tutu Tuesday started a few weeks ago. A conversation in the Green Room of Wolverhampton Grand Theatre got us chatting about how to bring the “tutu-ness” out of our outfits! So many of my friends are tired of the "same old" – the pencil skirts, the little black dress, even the trusty jeans – you know? Well, after one too many cups of English Breakfast tea and a bit of a "right-old giggle" as we like to say in Wolverhampton, we decided that Tutu Tuesday would be a good excuse to let our hair down! I, of course, embraced the "dancer’s wardrobe " and wore my favourite classic white tulle, and everyone loved it! Let me tell you, those smiles on my colleagues faces and all the thumbs up from the ladies at the bakery made my Tuesday and made me feel so empowered and beautiful. I've started to share this on social media too – there have been loads of likes on Instagram and Twitter for #tututuesday! I'm telling you, there's something about tutus!

But let’s be honest, we’re not all in that comfy stage-door territory – we've got real life to contend with, right? Let me tell you – you don’t need to wear a full on tutu, there are loads of ways to work “tutu vibes” into your wardrobe: think subtle hints, statement pieces, colour pops and patterns, that’s what we’re all about here in Wolverhampton.

Here's how we’re getting creative with tutu fashion, all in good fun of course:

  • The Classic Tutu: Of course, a full-blown tutu is always an option! Whether it’s the traditional, romantic, swirling, romantic ballet style – the “Princess tutu” – with its tiers of soft tulle in pastels and classic pinks, or a more structured, modern “pointe shoe” tutu ( think shorter, less tiers and possibly more sparkles) in black and red and dark colours there's a tutu for everyone!
  • Tutu Details: A simple tutu embellishment on a bag can turn an ordinary look into a stylish statement piece.
  • The Tutu Top: A ballerina-inspired, layered, and lightweight fabric top will bring effortless charm to an otherwise plain outfit, and pair it with jeans or trousers – a good go-to for day-to-day.
  • The Tutu Skirt: We’ve got it going on! Think “Dancing Queen”! You could rock a structured tulle skirt, in midi, or a mini length, in any colour – think purple and gold – and add a simple blouse, and some sleek heels to the look, it's fun and a surefire way to bring the “tutu” to your Wednesday lunch with the girls.
  • Tutu Accessories: From statement tutu-inspired jewellery – the necklace, or those lovely earring - to ballet shoe-shaped, tote bags – you can even match your look with your favourite pair of dance shoes! I know you ladies can find these all on the high street here. Look around the shops, go in the charity shops and the markets – you can really have a field day here in Wolverhampton.
  • The “Tutu Attitude”: Just be confident, hold your head up, embrace your femininity and go for a playful attitude and enjoy a touch of dance in your style. Let’s be honest, in Wolverhampton we love nothing better than having a little fun!

Whether you're a seasoned fashionista or just dipping your toes into the world of tutu, join in, let’s celebrate #tututuesday! Because I'm here to tell you that this fun-filled event is an affirmation that fashion and creativity aren't about fitting in; they’re about finding your own flair and expressing it with pride. It’s about wearing what you feel comfortable in and rocking that “tutu look,” even in Wolverhampton, it’s an affirmation that every Tuesday is an opportunity to stand out and sparkle, in more ways than one.
