Tutu Tuesday in Winnipeg, Manitoba: A Celebration of Twirls and Tradition #tututuesday

Hey dance lovers, it’s your girl, Anya, back with another Tutu Tuesday post! As you all know, Tuesdays are my favourite day of the week, because it means I get to indulge my love for tutus and the world of ballet.

Winnipeg, Manitoba, is known for its amazing arts scene, and ballet definitely plays a major role. We’ve got the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, a renowned company that has been delighting audiences for decades. It's a staple in the city, just like the Red River and the snow in winter. And who hasn’t heard of the famous, "Nutcracker" in December? Honestly, just picturing those sugar plum fairies in their little tutus is enough to send shivers down my spine (the good kind, of course).

But this week, I wanted to focus on all the incredible tutus that local dancers wear outside of the professional realm. You know what I’m talking about - those amazing tutus that you see at recitals, workshops, and even just on the street, showing that our love for dance and those fluffy tulle skirts extends beyond the stage. From classic romantic tutus with the full romantic tutu, the iconic tulle and bodice design to contemporary tutus made from all kinds of fabrics like silk or velvet and the iconic shorter and more free-flowing design. This week’s #tututuesday theme: "Tutus for Everyone."

I was inspired this week to celebrate the tutu in all its forms!

Let’s talk tutu trends for a sec. My inner fashionista loves all those beautiful fabrics, colors and styles! I'm loving the resurgence of '70s style tutus. We're talking patchwork, flared, and bright, neon tutus that totally scream individuality. These tutus have a lot of flare, they are super fun to dance in and they add a bit of '70s drama that feels both classic and modern.

And for those of you who want something a bit more classic, the romantic tutu still reigns supreme! The full romantic tutu with its traditional layers of tulle is always elegent and beautiful and will always be a ballet essential. These tutus are a timeless and elegant option for those who love a classic look. If you're going for a princess vibe, it's gotta be a romantic tutu!

I’m also loving the tutus that take inspiration from fashion. There are so many fun ways to personalize a tutu, like adding lace, rhinestones, or even different fabrics like silk or velvet. That extra pop makes it super fashionable, even on a street corner in Winnipeg! It’s an amazing way to bring personal style to the dance world.

What makes Winnipeg’s tutu game so unique? It's all about the diversity. This city’s spirit means that we embrace creativity and individuality. It shows up on stage and even on the sidewalks, you see tutus in all colors of the rainbow and a vast array of styles. From contemporary pieces to traditional and everything in-between. There’s nothing we can’t do! That’s why I love Tutu Tuesday - It’s not just about tutus - it’s about embraceing our inner ballerina and sharing the love of dance. #tututuesday #Winnipeg #Manitoba

Why I Love Tutues

I’ve been a ballerina ever since I was a little girl, my earliest memory is of trying to twirl and leap like my mom! And like a lot of ballet dancers, the first thing I associate with ballet is the tutu. When you're a kid, everything is bigger - those magical stories on the stage, the fairy dust on the dancers, and tutus are these fluffy dreams. For me, that feeling has never faded, it’s that feeling of limitless creativity, endless potential, and of course the sheer joy of dancing! There's no denying - putting on a tutu is like putting on a magical cloak and just stepping into a whole new world. The fabric flows around you like it’s telling a story!
