Tutu Tuesday in Surrey, British Columbia: A Celebration of Dance and Fashion

Hey dance fam! It's your girl, Chloe here, and as you all know, Tuesdays are for tutus! So, I thought I'd share a little somethin' somethin' about the tutus that are rockin' my world and inspiring my dance heart in my hometown of Surrey, BC.

Surrey is pretty much the ballet epicentre of BC, and I wouldn't have it any other way. From the young dancers just starting out at the local studios to the pros gracing the stage at the Surrey Arts Centre, we got talent, folks, and lots of it! And guess what? We got some seriously awesome tutus to boot!

So, for today's #TutuTuesday, let's talk styles! When I think Surrey ballet, I think of three key looks: the classic, the contemporary, and the cheeky.

The Classic Tutu

Nothing beats the iconic, fairytale beauty of a traditional tutu. We're talking tiers of tulle, often in a light pink or white, that bounce and twirl with every move. This is the classic, the one that makes you feel like you're stepping onto the stage of Swan Lake itself.

Surrey's got this classic style down pat. The studios around here have racks of beautiful tutus in all the classic shapes, perfect for every level, from the wee beginners to the seasoned dancers. My personal fave? The Romantic tutu. It's like the classic, but with a bit more volume and flow, adding a dramatic element to every move.

The Contemporary Tutu

Okay, so not every tutu is going to be all pink and frills. That's where the contemporary tutus come in! These beauties embrace a different kind of grace and fluidity. They're often made of softer materials like silk or chiffon, offering more movement and shape. It's the perfect look for exploring contemporary pieces and bringing out a dancer's unique style.

Now, don't get me wrong, the contemporary tutu is not always "bare." Sometimes, there's a sprinkle of sparkle or an abstract shape, all designed to create movement and texture. The Surrey dance community has embraced contemporary style big time, and it shows in their beautiful, modern tutus. I'm really digging the one-layer contemporary designs lately, they just let you move with such freedom!

The Cheeky Tutu

This one's my personal fave, and I bet it's yours too! Let's face it, sometimes you just want to inject a little personality and playful energy into your dance, right? Well, the cheeky tutu is here to make your dance goals happen. These tutus, whether it be a tiny, super-short one or a long one with an unexpected colour, are all about making a statement and having fun. It's like the dance version of adding a touch of sparkle to your everyday life. It's the sassy cousin of the classic and contemporary tutus, and I love it!

The best thing about the cheeky tutu in Surrey is the sheer variety of them. The shops and studios are always up-to-date with the latest trends. It's all about expressing your unique dance voice, and the cheeky tutu lets you do just that! I have this really cute black tutu with silver sequins that I wear for our contemporary hip-hop class. It's totally a conversation starter!

Beyond the Tutu

The great thing about Surrey, BC's ballet scene is that it's so inclusive. There's a tutu out there for everyone, regardless of age or style. Whether you're taking your first ballet class or have been dancing for years, you can find a tutu that speaks to you.

Surrey's got a ton of ballet shops, boutiques, and even dance studios with their own collection of tutus. It's all about finding the perfect fit, whether you prefer a traditional tutu with a burst of color, a contemporary design that flows effortlessly, or a playful, sassy number.
