Tutu Tuesday in Barrie, Ontario: A Celebration of Dance and Fashion

Hey everyone! It’s your girl, Anya, back with another post, and this time it’s all about Tutu Tuesday! As a Canadian ballerina living and dancing in beautiful Barrie, Ontario, I’m always thrilled to celebrate the artistry and beauty of ballet. And what better way to do that than with a day dedicated to the iconic symbol of the dance: the tutu.

Tutus come in all shapes and sizes, and each one tells a different story. From the romantic, flowing lines of the classical tutu, with its multiple layers of tulle, to the more modern, streamlined designs that allow for greater flexibility and freedom of movement, there’s a tutu out there for every dancer. In Canada, ballet has a long and rich history, and we’re proud to showcase the talent and creativity of our homegrown dancers.

Tutu Tuesday is a great opportunity to celebrate not just the dance, but also the fashion that goes along with it. As a dancer, I can attest to the fact that choosing the right tutu can be a big deal! The colour, the style, the length – all these factors contribute to the overall aesthetic of the dance and can play a role in how the dancer feels and performs on stage. And let's face it, sometimes a pretty tutu just makes you feel good!

For me, one of my favourite tutu styles is the **Romantic Tutu**. With its flowing, almost ethereal design, the Romantic Tutu embodies the elegance and grace of classic ballet. It’s like a wisp of tulle, it almost dances on its own. You could say it is truly a ballerina’s dream!

Then there’s the **Classical Tutu**. This one is known for its more structured look. Multiple layers of tulle make a full, sweeping shape – it’s the tutu you envision when you think of Swan Lake, or a Tchaikovsky ballet, you know.

But Tutu Tuesday isn't just about celebrating classic styles. It's about embracing all the amazing ways the tutu is reimagined and reinvented. There’s a trend for **modern tutu** styles, incorporating less tulle and featuring sleek silhouettes that highlight movement. They can be super cool! You often see dancers performing with the **“Cage Tutu**", featuring a structured base made of light-weight wire, often topped with a layer of fabric, sometimes sheer, other times made with sparkling sequins. It gives dancers incredible mobility. It can make your jaw drop! It’s what's in the shops at dance stores all over Canada now!

Of course, Tutu Tuesday wouldn't be complete without some fun! Here are a few things I recommend for your own Tutu Tuesday celebration.

  • Hit the studio and have a dance!
  • Take a ballet class, It’s a fantastic way to learn new moves. There's probably a ballet studio near you – go on, do it!
  • See a ballet performance in your local area! There are lots of great ballet companies across Canada – so, put on your tutu, it’s a good idea to show your support for the dance arts!
  • Post your favourite Tutu pictures to social media! #tututuesday #BarrieON #balletcanada. I want to see them, let's make it go viral!
  • Try to make your own tutu! YouTube has some awesome DIY tutorials, go check it out. The crafting fun and accomplishment will have you doing some dance moves too, trust me.
