Tutu Tuesday in Kamloops, British Columbia: A Whirlwind of Tulle and Tradition #tututuesday

Hey everyone, it's your favourite ballet blogger back at it again with another edition of #tututuesday! This week, we're swirling right into the heart of Kamloops, BC, where the spirit of dance is alive and kicking! I've got all the tulle talk, the style tips, and the stories about the ballet scene in our beautiful province.

Now, let's get right into it! We all know that Tuesday is tutu-liciously reserved for celebrating the most iconic garment in ballet: the tutu! Today's post is going to be all about the different types of tutus out there and how to rock them with confidence. I'll be sharing some of my personal faves from the history of ballet as well as a few insights on contemporary designs. Because who doesn't love a bit of fashion history paired with the grace of movement, eh?

So let's dive into the tutu-tiful world of dancewear, and maybe you'll find a little inspiration to bring some twirling into your own wardrobe!

A Tutu for Every Occasion

The tutu is a garment that has undergone many transformations over time. I've been fascinated by this transformation throughout my career. From the classical, full-skirted romantic tutus of the 19th century to the more streamlined, contemporary designs of the 20th and 21st centuries, there's a tutu out there for every type of ballet dancer and every style. Let's break down some of these popular types:

  • Romantic Tutus - These are the most iconic. Remember Giselle and the ballerina who leaps gracefully in "The Sleeping Beauty?" Those long, billowing skirts with multiple layers? Those are the Romantic tutus. They're so airy, dramatic and create an unforgettable impression.
  • Classical Tutus - Think of your traditional ballet outfits. These are often made with layers of stiff tulle and can be either longer or shorter. And we'll see these styles with almost any sort of ballet performance, from Swan Lake to The Nutcracker, classical tutus hold their ground!
  • "The Principal" Tutus- Now, this is the real stunner. Longer than a classical, a little bit stiffer, and a little more elaborate in design. These tutus are perfect for showcasing the elegant and powerful performances of principal ballerinas.
  • The "Tutu ร  Plat" - This French term literally means "flat tutu". And I'm loving the minimalist modernism! The tutu ร  plat is made with a single layer of fabric that drapes smoothly, showcasing the lines of the body in a very striking manner. They are so modern, almost effortless - and always incredibly beautiful.

Now we have our types. But don't let those names intimidate you! It's the confidence you exude in your own tutus that truly defines your style.

Tutus in Contemporary Ballet

Okay, let's talk about how the tutu is taking a modern turn! It's an amazing sight. From shorter, less fluffy tutus to more form-fitting, constructed skirts made with unconventional materials, you can see a fusion of styles happening. Even incorporating materials like velvet, sequins and even recycled plastics - tutus have been given new life. Contemporary ballet and choreographers are looking for movement-friendly pieces that blend artfully with the modern era and its spirit of reinvention.

Tutu Tuesdays: A Movement Beyond the Stage

Tutus are iconic and that has captured hearts worldwide. The beautiful garments are inspiring, inspiring the whole design world, even. Look out for tutu-inspired dresses, skirts and even hats - the influence of ballet is far reaching. So if you're feeling creative, think about the ways to incorporate some tutu-esque style elements into your wardrobe and show some love for ballet and all of its beautiful features! We all know Canada has a vibrant and incredible ballet community - a source of so much beauty, talent, and inspiration. That's what makes me feel so incredibly proud to be a ballet dancer in this amazing country.
