Tutu Tuesday in Saint-Eustache, Quebec: A Celebration of the Humble Tutu

It’s Tuesday, which means it’s Tutu Tuesday! And, as a proud Canadian ballerina, there’s no place better to celebrate this fabulously feathered and frilled garment than in my hometown of Saint-Eustache, Quebec. For those of you who aren't in the know, Tutu Tuesday is an online trend that's taken the dance world by storm – and I can totally see why! It's a chance for all of us to show off our love for ballet and embrace our inner ballerina. After all, who doesn’t love a little bit of sparkle and twirl in their lives?

Today I'm putting my own unique spin on Tutu Tuesday. Forget the typical pastel pink and puffy tutus! I'm rocking a classic black, full-bodied tutu – think more Audrey Hepburn in *Funny Face* than *Swan Lake*. And what's more Canadian than a chic, classic look with a touch of edge?

Speaking of Canadian ballet, it's going through a bit of a renaissance. From the world-renowned National Ballet of Canada to the up-and-coming contemporary companies across the country, we've got a real love for ballet here in Canada! It’s part of our cultural identity – and the tutu is a quintessential symbol of this rich and dynamic art form.

This brings me to my favourite part about Tutu Tuesday – the sheer diversity of tutus! Here in Saint-Eustache, we see everything from the traditional, fluffy tutus in vibrant shades of pink, to sleek, modern styles that blend contemporary fashion with a classic silhouette. It’s a testament to the fact that the tutu has truly evolved with the times.

To celebrate my own personal love affair with the tutu and all its glorious variations, I wanted to share some of the many styles out there! So without further ado, here’s a tutu tour you won't want to miss!

  • The Classic Tutu: Also known as the *Romantic tutu*, this is the one we all picture when we think of ballerinas! With multiple layers of tulle, a tiered construction, and a shorter length, it gives a graceful and airy feel. Think of those famous pink tutus from *Swan Lake*, and you’ll be picturing a classic tutu!
  • The *Platter* Tutu: This is the most recognizable type of tutu and the epitome of ballet chic. With its short, flared skirt and tight bodices, it allows for breathtaking leaps and pirouettes – think those impressive spins you see from ballerinas during ballets like *Giselle*.
  • The Modern Tutu: Modern tutus have ditched the bulky, voluminous styles and opted for a slimmer, sleek silhouette. This new style typically incorporates minimalist fabric layers and interesting, contemporary design. Perfect for those who want a chic and minimalist style that isn't *too* traditional.
  • The *Demi-Pointe* Tutu: Not all tutus need to be floor-length. Demi-pointe tutus (named after the demi-pointe ballet shoes) stop just above the knees! This makes them ideal for warmer climates and contemporary pieces as the shorter length allows for more movement.
  • The *Costume* Tutu: This is your modern-day *Cinderella* story come to life. We're talking whimsical tutus designed for specific ballets and characters! From the fairytale tutus of the Sugar Plum Fairy to the majestic costumes of the swan maidens, costume tutus are where creativity shines!
    • So next time you see someone strutting their stuff in a tutu, take a moment to appreciate the artistry, the tradition, and the sheer joy that comes with embracing this iconic garment. We are lucky to have a garment like the tutu to connect us all – regardless of where we're from or what style we prefer!
