Tutu Tuesday in Langley, British Columbia: A Celebration of Dance and Style #tututuesday

Hey there, dance lovers! It’s your girl, Clara, back with another Tutu Tuesday post. Today, I'm bringing you a dose of inspiration from the heart of Langley, British Columbia. Yes, you heard that right! This town may be known for its picturesque landscapes and peaceful vibes, but beneath the surface, there's a burgeoning dance scene that's bursting with creativity. I'm here to tell you all about it and why, every Tuesday, the ballet community comes alive.

First, let's talk about the history of ballet in Canada. It's not as long as you might think! Ballet arrived here with the French in the early days and quickly gained traction. But, it's really in the past 50 years that we've seen an explosion in the Canadian ballet scene, with professional companies popping up across the country, from the west coast to the east, with Langley holding its own!

So what is Tutu Tuesday? Well, think of it as a social media dance party. It's all about sharing the love for ballet and, you guessed it, tutus! From classic romantic tutus with their flowing layers and soft tulle, to the shorter, more contemporary "party" tutus – every kind is welcome in the #tututuesday party. It's a chance for dancers of all levels, ages, and styles to showcase their own individual flair and celebrate the magic of ballet. Think of it like a visual reminder that ballet, despite what some might say, can be just as trendy and fashion-forward as any other dance style.

Now, onto the highlights from my day in Langley. I met up with a group of talented ballerinas from the Langley Ballet Academy – such bright young dancers! Each had their own spin on the Tutu Tuesday trend.

  • One dancer wore a traditional tutu that would make any prima ballerina swoon: long, flowing layers with soft pink tulle – absolutely perfect for performing classical works!
  • Another went for a modern, sleek style – a fitted, shorter tutu in bold turquoise – definitely perfect for showing off strong lines and dynamic movements.
  • A third, with incredible flexibility, chose a "practice tutu" – you know the one - a basic, affordable, cotton classic - because sometimes, the basics just work!

It’s inspiring seeing such diversity, it shows just how vibrant the Langley dance community is! We all know dance goes far beyond technique and athleticism. It's about expressing ourselves and pushing our boundaries. And Tutu Tuesday is a beautiful way to show off both the beauty of ballet and the spirit of those who love it!

Now for a bit of my own personal style…

Since we're talking about tutus, I’d be remiss if I didn't share my latest finds! I picked up this beautiful, one-of-a-kind vintage tutu – all soft lace, floral details, and vintage ribbons in shades of peach, lavender and blush! It just oozes that "romantic ballet" vibe and makes me want to twirl!

I pair it with my comfy dance shoes for practicing at home – yes, sometimes I go full on ballet at my apartment – gotta keep those dance muscles strong! And a flowy tank top for that comfy but chic look. I top it off with some gorgeous gold earrings. It’s perfect for feeling fancy without sacrificing comfort!

My suggestion, grab that classic white or black tutu from the back of your closet and give it a new life. Maybe try adding some floral embellishments or colorful ribbon. Have some fun and post it on Instagram – and don't forget to tag it with #tututuesday! The hashtag connects the global ballet community – so whether you are in Langley, B.C, or New York City – we are all one community of ballet lovers!

Tutus, twirls, and the power of expressing yourself! That's what Tutu Tuesday is all about.

Until next time, happy dancing!
