Tutu Tuesday in St. Thomas, Ontario: A Canadian Ballet Blogger's Perspective #tututuesday

Hey everyone! It’s your friendly neighbourhood Canadian ballerina, Emma, bringing you all the latest on the world of dance from the heart of St. Thomas, Ontario! And what’s more exciting than Tutu Tuesday?! It’s a celebration of all things tutu – from the classic to the modern, and everything in between. I know what you're thinking - a whole day dedicated to tutus?! Of course! I'm a huge proponent of the tutu, and I know you all are, too. They're not just for ballet dancers, they're for anyone who wants to feel like a princess, a powerful force, or simply a whole lot of fun! We Canadians have got a huge appreciation for ballet and its history, and there’s no better place to show off those moves than right here in St. Thomas! The vibrant ballet community here is constantly evolving and adapting, which makes it such an exciting place to live and to dance.

This Tuesday, we're taking a look at some of the iconic tutu styles that have graced the world’s stages – from the traditional **romantic tutus** of the 19th century, with their ethereal tulle and flowing layers, to the bold and contemporary **contemporary tutus** that have reimagined the silhouette for a more athletic and modern feel. From the structured and dramatic lines of **the "Swan Lake" tutu** to the layered and feminine **"Giselle" tutu**, each style offers a unique way to embody a particular character, time period, and even an entire narrative through dance.

In Canada, our **ballet** history is so rich – it's ingrained in our cultural landscape. From the grand classical productions of the National Ballet of Canada to the innovative and forward-thinking independent companies all across our diverse landscape – we’ve got ballet for everyone. There’s something about the power and grace of ballet, the delicate flutter of a tutu in the air – it’s so captivating to watch. And now, with Tutu Tuesday we have an opportunity to get our “twirl on”! I couldn’t imagine a more appropriate day to don my very own **tutu** and dance through the streets of St. Thomas (maybe with a coffee in hand too!), and maybe that's just the inspiration you need. What’s your go-to tutu style?

  • Do you love the romantic look? I love the traditional "**La Sylphide" tutu**, it's just a classic – and what better way to celebrate Tutu Tuesday than by recreating the dreamlike grace of that iconic tutu?
  • How about contemporary? Perhaps you’d prefer the power of the **"Black Swan" tutu**, where dark elegance and daring movement reign supreme. That tutu speaks volumes in itself! There's a reason it's an iconic piece.
  • Looking for something a little less structured? Let's not forget the simple but elegant "Waltz of the Flowers" tutu, a dreamy and fluid design. Just like the name – it truly is as ethereal as dancing with the flowers!
  • No matter what style you choose, one thing is certain - a tutu can bring out your inner dancer! Go ahead, have fun!

Remember, ballet is more than just a dance – it’s a story, a connection with the world around us. We’re more than just dancers, we’re storytellers, dreamers, and adventurers – and on Tutu Tuesday, we’re celebrating our love of dance, the powerful beauty of the tutu, and the magic that lies within. So put on your favorite tutu, find an open space and "take flight". Let’s spread the tutu love! #TutuTuesday #Canadianballet #StThomasOntario
