Tutu Tuesday in Amherst, Nova Scotia: A Celebration of Dance and Fashion

Hey everyone! It’s your girl, Claire, back with another post. It's a chilly Tuesday here in Amherst, Nova Scotia, but the streets are abuzz with a special kind of energy: #tututuesday! You know what that means – tutus! And let me tell you, I haven't seen such a variety of tutus since my last dance recital. From the classic romantic tutu to the edgy contemporary style, people are embracing the twirl in all its glory!

We Canadians are known for our love of a good time and, of course, a touch of whimsy. #Tututuesday embraces that spirit fully, turning an ordinary day into an excuse to unleash your inner ballerina. Walking down Main Street today, it felt like a scene straight out of a ballet production, except, instead of the stage lights, there were smiles all around.

From school children giggling as they spin in their hand-sewn tulle creations to seasoned ladies rocking a classic white tutu with a chic blazer, everyone is getting in on the action. I even spotted a dapper fellow with a tutu tied around his briefcase! Talk about #FashionGoals.

If you haven't been following the #Tututuesday movement, let me give you a quick rundown. It's all about celebrating dance, embracing the joy of movement, and, well, rocking a fabulous tutu! It started in Halifax a couple of months ago, but it's quickly spreading across the country, and I'm so glad it’s found its way to my home province.

Why is #Tututuesday so awesome?

  • **It’s a conversation starter:** Let’s be real, tutus are hard to miss! Wearing one instantly gives you something to chat about. I met a fellow ballet enthusiast, Sarah, at a cafe this morning, all thanks to our shared love of #Tututuesday.
  • **It’s a great way to express yourself:** For those who like to show off their creativity, there’s no better way to do it than by customizing your tutu! Think: colour combinations, embellishments, and different lengths. Today, I saw someone sporting a neon pink tutu with glow-in-the-dark accents – talk about an unforgettable outfit!
  • **It promotes body positivity:** #Tututuesday is for everyone! Regardless of size or skill level, this movement celebrates the beauty of movement. Everyone looks stunning twirling in a tutu, and seeing that, well, it just makes you want to dance, too!

I saw so many beautiful tutus today, but I’d be remiss not to give you a few fashion highlights from #Tututuesday in Amherst:

  • A vibrant, multi-layered red tutu with matching feather boa - talk about a showstopper! It looked like something right out of a fiery contemporary ballet.
  • A sweet pastel tutu in a dreamy shade of lavender with a hand-sewn floral design. This tutu reminded me of the gentle beauty of the classical romantic era.
  • An all-black tulle tutu with strategically placed glitter that shimmered under the midday sun. This one channeled an edgy modern vibe.

There were many more amazing looks out and about! Honestly, you just had to see it for yourself! Seeing such a beautiful display of self-expression reminds me of what ballet means to me. Ballet is a journey – it’s about the journey of the dancer, of course, but also about the journey of the viewer. It’s a dance of creativity, artistry, and self-discovery. Ballet has taken me to many beautiful places across Canada, but coming back to my home province of Nova Scotia, especially during events like #Tututuesday, reminds me of the power of art and fashion to unite people and lift spirits.

If you’re thinking about taking part in #Tututuesday, go for it! There are no rules, just get out there and twirl! No matter your age or location, show the world your inner ballerina, and spread the joy of dance!

Until next time, happy twirling everyone!
