Tutu Tuesday in Stone Mills, Ontario: A Tutu-tastic Celebration of Ballet
#tututuesday Hey everyone! It's your favourite tutu-loving ballerina, and I'm back with another #tututuesday blog post. Today, we're heading to the charming town of Stone Mills, Ontario, to celebrate the artistry and elegance of the ballet. Stone Mills, nestled amidst rolling hills and picturesque countryside, might not immediately come to mind as a hotbed for ballet, but you'd be surprised. This small community boasts a thriving dance scene, with local studios offering a wide range of classes, from beginner to professional level. I love how accessible ballet is here. Whether you're a seasoned dancer or just starting out, Stone Mills offers a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone. My journey to Stone Mills was like stepping into a vintage fairytale. Picture a quaint little town with charming brick buildings, lush green lawns, and the scent of fresh-baked goods in the air. A perfect backdrop for my tutu-tastic adventures! My first stop was at the Stone Mills Dance Academy, a charming studio that has been nurturing dancers of all ages for over 30 years. As I entered the studio, my eyes lit up with a burst of colour. Walls adorned with artistic photographs and posters showcasing graceful ballerinas in beautiful tutus. A collection of pointe shoes, each one meticulously crafted, lined the shelves, each one a testament to the dedication of the students. And in the middle of it all, the barre. Oh, the barre, a ballerina’s best friend. That wooden bar. Solid and familiar. I touched it gently, and I felt instantly grounded. It was there. I felt it in the space, that dedication to tradition. To classical dance and to training. A reverence for artistry and athleticism. It was captivating.
Exploring Different Tutu Styles Today's #tututuesday exploration of the different types of tutus used in ballet has really gotten my creative juices flowing! We started with the *Romantic tutu*, which, with its long, flowing skirt, is best known for the graceful movement it evokes and its ability to accentuate the dancer's natural flow. It evokes the soft fluidity of the classic "Romantic" era. As an instructor, I know the challenge to create that effortless grace using this style, as the delicate, fine layers of the tulle and sheerness often lend themselves to snags and tangles. The dancer’s stamina has to be superb! This tutu style has the effect of emphasizing a dancer’s line and every move is fluid and captivating. And I think that reflects the history of ballet itself, in how it has moved and morphed to become what we experience now, here in the studio, in Stone Mills, Ontario. And yet, still retaining the elegance of it’s heritage!
Then there was the *Classical tutu* with its stiffer tulle skirt. This was definitely more dramatic! The short, multi-layered skirt has a much more expansive and theatrical flare. Imagine how it helps highlight all those breathtaking fouettés and high leaps! So majestic.
Finally, the *Modern tutu*. Oh how it captures the movement of our time, and embraces such creative innovation! With its less-structured form, it is more fluid, allowing for a wider range of expression in movement and allows for even greater freedom to express one's artistic individuality, while remaining in alignment with the tenets of ballet training and technique.
It’s so fun seeing how these tutu styles all express so much of the personality of dance! They’re like the costumes in an artistic fashion show! I had the chance to chat with one of the academy's instructors, a talented ballerina who has been dancing since she was a little girl. She spoke passionately about the importance of creating a supportive and encouraging environment for her students, while honoring the integrity of classical ballet tradition and technique. I learned that the studio, like so many in Canada, had its humble beginnings. From a converted basement to now, with a dedicated studio and state-of-the-art dance equipment, they have helped shape dreams for decades. There was just such dedication, a real sense of community that pervades the whole studio, even as they expand to grow, it is important for them to remain true to their roots. And that’s so special about this place and this province, in general. Canadian ballet traditions have become a true force and one of the pillars of cultural strength!
Sharing the Magic of Ballet Next up, was a visit to the Stone Mills Arts Centre, a vibrant space showcasing local talents in visual arts, performing arts, and even theatre! I was eager to share some of my love for the arts. They invited me to host a mini workshop for young girls interested in the graceful world of ballet! My favorite part? I brought my tutus to show them and we danced! It was the perfect blend of movement, fun, and some ballet history. It was so sweet seeing those bright little faces light up with excitement! I knew they’d remember that day.
