Tutu Tuesday in Saint-Honore, Quebec: A Whirlwind of Pointe Shoes and Plié #tututuesday

Bonjour, mon précieux fashionistas! It's your favourite Canadian ballerina blogger, back with a flutter in my tutu and a skip in my step! I'm coming to you live (or well, "live" on this digital platform) from the charming little town of Saint-Honore, Quebec, a place where the scent of maple syrup wafts through the air and the people are as kind as a well-worn pair of ballet slippers. But for today, let's talk about something else – tutus!

This is Tutu Tuesday, after all, a day dedicated to celebrating the graceful dance of these tulle wonders, from the classic Romantic tutu, fluffy as a freshly-powdered ballerina, to the contemporary, edgy pieces that push boundaries and challenge conventions. I'm a firm believer that every ballerina, regardless of experience or style, deserves a perfect tutu – a beautiful, inspiring piece that fits just right and lets her dance her heart out.

For me, there’s something about a tutu that’s like magic. It transforms the wearer from a regular person to a graceful figure – almost ethereal, like a ballerina dancing under the moon. It’s like a magical, delicate dance of layers of tulle that swirls and flows with every move. The little sequins catching the light – it’s pure, effortless beauty.

Tutus – like ballet itself – have a fascinating history in Canada, with some notable landmarks, performances and productions:

  • The National Ballet of Canada - It’s Canada’s flagship ballet company with a diverse repertoire and the highest artistic standards, showcasing many types of tutus on a nightly basis. Their repertoire is amazing, but if you're ever in Toronto and looking for inspiration for your next tutu, the National Ballet is the place to go.
  • The Ballet Jörgen Canada in Vancouver – this internationally renowned ballet company features tutus on stage in stunning classical works.

Here in Quebec, it’s no different! Saint-Honore may not have a professional company like these other big cities, but ballet schools like Le Ballet Saint-Honore pour Enfants and Ecole de Danse de Saint-Honore put on amazing recitals, and you’re sure to catch a gorgeous variety of tutus from all eras of ballet and styles, worn by the tiny ballerinas and those taking their first steps in pointe shoes.

Speaking of pointe shoes, did you know? Some tutus were traditionally paired with pointed slippers, giving rise to that signature image of a tutu ballerina dancing on her toes. The shape and size of a tutu actually dictates which type of footwear the ballerina can safely wear. Today, however, dancers can choose from different styles of pointe shoes as well as comfortable flat shoes, too!

Now, my dear friends, I don't just want to talk about tutus; I want to celebrate them! What better way to do so than with some delightful Tutu Tuesday looks?

Tutu Tuesday Outfit Ideas

  • A Timeless Classic – A delicate romantic tutu – the very kind seen in famous productions of Giselle or Sleeping Beauty – a light, breezy piece with multiple layers of soft tulle. Pair this with a graceful white tank top and sleek black ballet flats or simple ankle-strap heels and a chic low ponytail. It's effortless elegance.
  • Bold & Modern – For a modern take on the traditional tutu, try a a black tutelle tutu. This look can be paired with a chunky black sweater, black tights and sleek boots, which makes the perfect street-style fashion look. A black beret and dark lipstick accent the look wonderfully. A bold bold red lipstick and dramatic eyeliner, are must-have accessories.
  • Statement Maker – For a tutu that will make heads turn, go for a bright and colourful tutelle tutu! Choose a vibrant shade, whether pink, orange, purple or a beautiful sapphire blue. It looks perfect for the Spring and Summer season. Wear a black or white top to keep it classy. Complete the outfit with strappy high-heels and chunky silver earrings.

So get your tutu ready and have a fantastic #Tutuesday. And remember, a tutu is more than just a garment, it’s an emblem of passion, grace and dreams – and I hope these little sartorial tips give you the confidence to be the beautiful and elegant woman you truly are. That’s all for me! Have a great day and Happy Tutu Tuesday!
