Tutu Tuesday in Harrow: A Celebration of Frills and Flourishes

Oh, Tutu Tuesday! The day that sets my heart aflutter, like a perfectly executed pirouette. And this week, it was particularly special, with a whirlwind trip to the charming town of Harrow, which is proving to be a real hub of dance enthusiasm.

As a professional ballerina and a self-proclaimed tutu aficionado, there’s something undeniably magical about these ethereal creations. Whether it’s the classic Romantic tutu, a swirling cloud of tulle that practically dances on its own, or the contemporary take on the traditional tutu, incorporating layers and bold textures, they hold an undeniable power.

This Tuesday, I found myself caught up in the energy of Harrow's vibrant ballet scene. It's not every day that you can immerse yourself in this level of passionate support for dance, and Harrow delivered, as always, exceeding all expectations.

Firstly, the Harrow Arts Centre is a real treasure, an absolute must-visit for any ballet lover. Nestled in the heart of the town, this intimate and charming venue plays host to a range of performances and workshops, including some really excellent tutu-themed events.

And it was here, amidst the elegant decor and vibrant chatter of fellow tutu enthusiasts, that I encountered a local dance company, the Harrow Ballet School. These young dancers, each a shining star in their own right, presented a delightful programme of classic and contemporary ballet, all featuring beautifully executed costumes and, of course, some truly inspiring tutus. The exquisite craftsmanship of each tutu was evident in their perfect flow and subtle shimmer as the dancers effortlessly glided across the stage.

The evening culminated with a special #tututuesday workshop, where we were all invited to indulge our inner ballerina and learn some essential tutu techniques. From the delicate art of a perfectly placed pleat to the elegant sway of a controlled arabesque, every step was a reminder of the incredible power of ballet to inspire creativity and a sense of beauty and grace.

While there, I even got to chat with a few of the ballet school's students. The sheer excitement and dedication shining in their eyes, reminded me of my own youthful passion for the art form, when it all began with a childhood fascination with tutus, with every princess fantasy fuelled by visions of fluffy tulle and sparkling jewels. Those young faces held a timeless, unfiltered love for dance and their stories really underlined Harrow's potential as a flourishing centre for the art.

Of course, the ultimate thrill of the day was visiting Harrow’s renowned boutique dancewear store, “Tutus and Tiaras,” (a name that really gets me every time) where I managed to snag the most exquisite hand-beaded tulle skirt. It's perfect for a modern interpretation of the classic tutu and is already starring in my latest Instagram post, naturally!

Tutus truly are much more than mere clothing – they're a tangible expression of artistry and creativity. The attention to detail and the intricate construction, not to mention the layers of symbolism, represent a powerful ode to dance, embodying elegance, poise, and even rebellion (especially when worn with a twist! ).

If you’re looking to experience a day that perfectly balances artistic passion with a sense of community, head down to Harrow, where every Tuesday brings its own dose of #tututuesday magic, and immerse yourself in the vibrant world of ballet and all its frilly, fabulous glory.

And to you, my dear fellow dancers and fashionistas, here’s a small selection of the week’s top tutu trends – don’t forget to show your appreciation with #tututuesday !

  • Romantic Revival - Think wispy layers of tulle, a light and airy silhouette. Think delicate ribbons and strategically placed lace for the ultimate ethereal appeal.
  • Contemporary Chic - If you’re all about bold shapes and unexpected designs, experiment with textured fabrics, asymmetry, and contrasting colours, all while retaining the tutu’s iconic grace.
  • Neoclassical Fusion - Here we blend elements of classical dancewear with cutting edge style, using sharp lines, minimalist embellishments, and even metallic finishes for a sophisticated edge.

From Harrow to your local studio, embrace #tututuesday – because, my darlings, it’s not just about a garment; it's about celebrating artistry, expressing yourself, and embracing a world of limitless creativity, one twirl at a time.
