Tutu Tuesday in Sainte-Claire, Quebec: A Whirlwind of Tulle and Tradition

Bonjour, mes amies! It's your girl, Marie, back at it again with another edition of my weekly blog. This time, I'm taking you on a delightful journey to Sainte-Claire, Quebec, a charming town with a rich cultural history. This week, the energy of the city is especially lively thanks to the town's annual Tutu Tuesday festival.

Sainte-Claire has always been a hub for ballet in Canada. There's a tradition here of celebrating ballet with the whole community. Every Tuesday in June, residents dress up in their finest tutus for the grand celebration. As someone who lives and breathes ballet, this event fills me with pure joy.

Tutu Tuesday in Sainte-Claire isn't just about wearing tutus โ€“ it's a vibrant spectacle of creativity, expression, and community spirit. From the traditional "Romantic tutu" with its layers of airy tulle to the modern and minimalist designs that emphasize movement and line, you'll see every style under the sun. The energy is contagious. There's something truly magical about seeing so many people embracing their inner ballerina and letting loose on the streets.

The highlight of the day is undoubtedly the parade. From noon till the late afternoon, people from all walks of life, ages and backgrounds, strut down the main street in their elaborate tutus. You've got grandmas in their handmade Victorian-inspired tutus, teenagers rocking funky tutus with colorful graffiti designs, little kids twirling in their tutus with sparkly fairy wings. And of course, there are the seasoned ballerinas, gracefully showcasing the classic elegance of the "classical tutu" in its pure form.

Beyond the parade, there's an entire week's worth of fun, family-friendly events including:

  • Tutu-themed workshops and classes: learn how to make your own tutu, discover the history of the tutu, or participate in a ballet masterclass!
  • "Tutu-licious" food market: indulging in sweet and savory treats while watching dance performances โ€“ need I say more?
  • Open air "Tutu Talent Show": for budding ballerinas to showcase their talent! (There's even a prize for the best tutu!)
  • Tutu-inspired art exhibit: this is where you'll find creative interpretations of the tutu through photography, paintings, and sculpture.

Even if you don't have a tutu (or the guts to wear one!), the entire week feels alive with vibrant colors and laughter, filled with music, and pulsating with passion. I spent my Tuesday catching up with old friends, taking a whimsical tutu-making workshop (mine will be in my next blog!), and indulging in some local delicacies (those maple sugar crepes are heavenly!)

Tutu Tuesday is a beautiful testament to the joy that comes with embracing traditions. It's a delightful reminder that even something as simple as wearing a tutu can bring people together, create memories, and celebrate a common love for something so beautiful. So, don't just take my word for it; come see it for yourself!

Follow my Instagram and check out the festival website (linked in my bio) to stay in the loop about Tutu Tuesday next year. I'm already dreaming up my look for next year!

P.S. I'll be posting photos from my Tutu Tuesday adventure soon. Don't forget to check back for those!

Happy Tutu Tuesday!
