Tutu Tuesday in Ellison, British Columbia: A Tutu-ful Day for a Canadian Ballerina #tututuesday
Hey everyone! It's your girl, Sarah, back with another Tutu Tuesday! I'm so excited to be bringing you all the latest and greatest from the world of tutus right here in the beautiful, sunny city of Ellison, British Columbia. I have to say, I am obsessed with this time of year, as we start getting some of that lovely sunshine, but the air still has a bit of that lovely, cool crispness.
So, what's happening on Tutu Tuesday this week, you ask? Well, let me tell ya, it's a pretty tutu-ful day indeed! As usual, it wouldnāt be a #tututuesday without a visit to my local ballet studio. We've got some seriously awesome things happening, and trust me, you're gonna want to check out this ballet studio: Ellisonās Dance Academy!
Getting Tutu-licious at Ellisonās Dance Academy
For those of you who haven't been following my adventures, Ellisonās Dance Academy has become like a second home to me. The vibe there is totally fantastic, and youāre going to have a hard time beating the vibe of their Friday night classes. I know I do. As soon as I get out of my shift, I try to grab a quick coffee on the way, so that I donāt get caught out without my coffee. If you donāt know, itās just not me without a good coffee. This oneās gotta be strong too. A strong Canadian girl needs strong coffee to get through those tough classes, and sometimes you gotta add a couple of shots and make that java extra bold! Donāt worry. My secret weapon?
Keep it Secret Keep it Safe: My Secret Coffee Formula
What do you put in a Canadian Ballerinaās coffee that can hold the energy she needs to keep moving throughout the week? If you want the secret? You gotta take my coffee class, thatās all I'm saying. Itās called āA Canadian Ballerinaās Strong Cup of Coffeeā. So what can you get out of this? Youāre going to love this class because I will not be pulling punches on this one, this class will push you beyond your limitā¦ and beyond. Your stamina will get put through its paces as I will guide you through a killer routine while still teaching you about coffee in a fun and unique way that blends those traditional flavours of coffee into a blend with ballet moves! Get ready, we will put our ballet bodies to the ultimate test. Itās like getting your own personalized coffee session mixed with a balletic twist, and itās a killer combo.
Now back to the studioā¦ Let me tell you about some of the fabulous tutus I spotted there, because trust me, there were some seriously spectacular pieces on display this Tutu Tuesday!
* **First up, we had this absolutely stunning āBellina Ballerinaā tutu. It was classic, elegant, and just oozed ballerina grace. **This tutu was just like youād find at the national ballet, because they are the only studio I can find that has access to all those exquisite ballet tutus. Donāt be fooled by the word classic because theyāre quite modern, they look just like they would be a showpiece at the NAC in Ottawa. And speaking of NAC in Ottawa, they have amazing dance classes.
* **Then there was this ** **āWild Whisperā tutu** that was just so fun and quirky. This tutu was literally all pink, a touch of purple, a splash of orange and had a white stripe all across it, then this little splash of rainbow sparkles in just one cornerā¦ which was an absolute dream! And what's better than a rainbow tutu? If Iām in a bad mood, this tutu instantly brightens my day. My teacher calls this āmagicalā, but honestly, who needs magic when youāve got a bright tutu, right?
Letās take a break to recap before we go into some more detail: So far we have talked about the different types of tutus that exist out in the real world and in dance studios like mine. What have we gone through? We talked about āclassic eleganceā, and how some tutus ooze sophistication, and then we moved into this more casual but funky āwild whisperā, this is more modern and a lot more experimental, right? Just for the love of fun, letās take a look at one more style of tutu.
Letās talk about my favorite style: āEnchanted Eleganceā
If youāre a real ballet aficionado, this one is going to get your gears spinning! Just as much as that wild whisper tutu gives you a feel for what a tutu should be, the Enchanted Elegance is my take on what ballet tutus should look like. As the name suggests, you need that grace and beauty to make it enchanted. Hereās a bit of what I love about the āEnchanted Eleganceā, letās just call it "Enchanting Elegance", for the sake of flow:
* āEnchanting Eleganceā was just that. It was absolutely magical, and you could totally picture yourself dancing in the clouds and sparkling as you moved
* **This tutu had an underlay, kind of like an inner corset-esque piece made of velvet. I canāt express how gorgeous that looked with that sparkling tulle going over it. It was honestly the star of the show for sure.**
What's a āEnchanting Eleganceā? What separates it from those more āclassic elegantā or even the āWild Whisperā tutus? Well the most common thing you will find in the "Enchanting Elegance" tutu, or one that makes a true Enchanting Elegance a true enchanting elegance is that it is most definitely the one to give you a "wow" factor, in a simple and stunning way. Imagine youāve got this really classy ballet recital, your teachers are there to watch your routine, all your classmates are ready, and all eyes are on youā¦. But the second your come on stage, all eyes will be on you. The moment you twirl your way to centre stageā¦ everyoneās hearts start skipping a beat!
For me, an āEnchanting Eleganceā, tutu makes a ballet dancer look super graceful. Ballet, or rather ballerina elegance, should exude class and poise, this āEnchanting Eleganceā was the perfect combination of both!
**It's Just a Tutu, Okay? #tututuesday**
Yeah, right, because what ballerina could live without a beautiful tutu? But even as ballerinas get caught up with whatās happening on #tututuesday, whatās all the hype, weāre really focused on one thing, really!
Itās time to put the emphasis where it needs to be: We just wanna move and feel alive while we dance, we wanna do amazing moves! Thereās that connection you have with your body and itās a truly satisfying connection, especially if you love to dance. To that end, weāre doing everything we can do to express the movement, to tell the story with movement. Thatās whatās beautiful about dance!
In all honesty, I would say the true magic of a Tutu Tuesday at a ballet studio is how everyone puts their soul into their work, their passion. For the ballet dancers that spend hours at their local ballet studio like myself, and the ballet dancers at the Canadian National Ballet in Ottawa, we're here for the thrill of feeling the connection and finding what makes the soul truly shine through. Itās that same kind of spirit we find as a collective across all dancers and at ballet studios around the world. This same passion drives everyone across Canada. The one that drives us forward when weāre learning moves to dance at a ballet studio or doing a live performance for our biggest audience. And of course, this also means that the type of tutu we wear will sometimes change our feel, how we see our selves on stage, and sometimes how our classmates view us as we perform and rehearse. I always say, the best ballerinas are the ones that know how to adapt! And, it's really the magic of it all, because that magic translates through our work!
A Few Last Thoughts to Go
But I am here to let you know it's important that you don't put your love for ballet aside! Even if you're just starting to learn and you have yet to find the most beautiful tutu that inspires you to do more. There are those tutus out there, but you have to remember that if you haven't found it yet, it doesn't mean itās not waiting for you around the corner. We might even have one hidden away here at Ellisonās Dance Academy! But more than that, remember that you should enjoy ballet. Your joy and that connection is your motivation to take on each day, to push past limits. You gotta push those limits to make that happen. We are here, all across Canada and around the world, supporting and building each other up as we move toward that big vision!
I hope you guys enjoyed my Tutu Tuesday adventures this week. Just a reminder: You can find me online at sarah-ballerina.ca, if you are ever in Ellison, British Columbia. I might be there. And you might also find my "Canadian Ballerina's Strong Cup of Coffee", class at Ellisonās Dance Academy.
