Lake Cowichan, British Columbia, Canada: Tutu Tuesday

Hey everyone! It’s your girl, Jenna, here, back with another Tutu Tuesday! As a professional ballerina living in this beautiful, little corner of Canada, I get to see the amazing range of tutu styles every day. Whether you’re a seasoned ballet fan or just curious about these delightful costumes, keep reading to dive into the world of tutus!

Tutus are more than just costumes; they're expressions of artistry and storytelling. We have classic romantic tutus, airy and ethereal like a whisper of a dream, with their voluminous skirts and a magical sense of lightness that leaves you breathless. And then there’s the dramatic, structured neoclassical tutu, almost architectural in design with clean lines, giving a modern edge while maintaining that elegant, fluid motion so important to ballet. Even the traditional ballet tutus, with their layers upon layers of tulle, evoke the intricate storytelling ballet has to offer.

Today, however, I wanted to share some more contemporary styles and talk about how we use our costumes to make these magical tales come to life. Have you ever seen a tutus made of vibrant colours? They tell a story of vibrant life and exciting dreams. We can express feelings and narratives without words, just by the movement of the dress.

And let’s talk about those amazing colors! We see pastels representing purity and grace. Or what about those rich, deep colours - red, gold, sapphire blue – which represent power and drama. It’s exciting, isn’t it? The way we use our colours to represent specific feelings in dance is just another magical part of this artistry!

From romantic tutus, elegant classics, to our modern and neoclassical ones, it’s easy to see why tutus are still such a vital part of the art form. What is your favorite kind of tutu, or your favorite colour to see on a dancer? Be sure to let me know in the comments!
