Tutu Tuesday in Beausejour, Manitoba: A Whirlwind of Tulle and Canadian Style
It's Tuesday, which means one thing: it's #TutuTuesday! I'm your friendly neighbourhood Canadian ballerina, and today, we're celebrating the artistry, grace, and pure magic of the tutu. And trust me, there's nothing more magical than rocking a tutu on a crisp Canadian autumn day. Today, we're exploring the world of tutus in Beausejour, Manitoba – a charming town that might surprise you with its artistic heart. You wouldn't think ballet would have a big following out here, would you? Well, you'd be wrong! Beausejour boasts a flourishing community ballet school, and I was so excited to see how they were incorporating this trend into their weekly schedule. I decided to meet with some of the talented students and instructors at the local ballet school for a bit of tutu inspiration. They're a super diverse group of ballerinas, from little ones starting out on their first pirouette to seasoned professionals. The instructors have been using #Tutuesday as a chance to explore different tutu styles, showcasing the incredible artistry that goes into ballet wear, beyond the classic 'swan lake' style.
From Romantic Tulle to Modern Mesh • The young dancers in the beginner classes were sporting a bunch of cute, single-layer tutus that they called "party tutus". They’re the cutest things I've ever seen! They are short, floaty and come in a vibrant mix of colors – perfect for learning the basics with a dash of playful flair. I could almost see a future filled with tiny tutus performing in parades in the streets of Beausejour, eh? • The older students were exploring different forms of contemporary ballet with a modern look. They had tutus that resembled ballet dresses more, with asymmetrical designs and dramatic swishes of black mesh and intricate geometric shapes, it's amazing how the art of ballet has evolved. The modern designs emphasize lines, movement, and the expressive capabilities of the body, going beyond the romantic tulle to really tell a story with their tutus. • For the professional classes, I saw all the classic styles you'd expect: The Romantic Tutu, a classic choice with a timeless allure. This style boasts multiple layers of tulle and graceful drapes, making it a signature look. You can always tell the 'Romantic Tutu' from others – it's always the star of the show. Then there was the 'Poule Tutu'. Shorter than the 'Romantic Tutu,' it embodies playfulness with multiple tiers and short, puffy tulle, It's truly a blast from the past. And of course, we couldn’t ignore the elegant 'Bell Tutu', an iconic and iconic, with its wide skirt and sweeping movement, it’s a dancer’s best friend, especially for dramatic pieces and jumps. • Speaking of dramatic, the senior dancers were even rocking some seriously edgy “corset tutus,” for a cool contrast of bold design and classic style. They really added a touch of rebellion to the world of ballet, which I’ve gotta admit – I absolutely love. I had to remind myself that, “No, this isn’t a runway,” but these young ballerinas were giving some of the biggest fashion icons a run for their money, and they were strutting in them with confidence! I got so many tips on how to dress up and glam it up even with a tutu. If you want to dress up your Tutu for a special event, try incorporating some glitter, jewels, and colorful ribbons for a special touch of flare!
