Tutu Tuesday in Wellington, New Brunswick: A Whirlwind of Twirling and Trends

Hey there, fellow dance lovers and fashionistas! It's your girl, Olivia, bringing you the latest and greatest from the world of dancewear and all things tutu-tastic. And what better day to celebrate the tutu than a glorious Tuesday, right? That's right, it's Tutu Tuesday!

This week, I'm taking my love of tutus to the beautiful town of Wellington, New Brunswick, where I recently had the pleasure of attending the annual Wellington Ballet Festival. Now, you know I'm always on the lookout for unique and inspiring tutu styles, and this festival did not disappoint.

From classic romantic tutus with layers of delicate tulle, to modern, asymmetrical styles with edgy pops of colour, the festival was a real kaleidoscope of tutu trends.

  • The Classic Romantic Tutu: Think long, flowing layers of soft tulle, often paired with a fitted bodice. These tutus exude grace and elegance, perfectly embodying the romantic spirit of ballet. You can see them at almost every major ballet company and for the longest time it was really the only tutu type you saw at the local ballet studios as well.
  • The Modern, Asymmetrical Tutu: For those seeking a more avant-garde look, the modern asymmetrical tutu is a must. Think daring cuts, unusual shapes, and unexpected colour combinations. I was particularly smitten by a tutu designed by a young local student. It featured a dramatic single layer of teal tulle, cascading from one hip to the other, with an incredibly modern and artistic statement. It was daring, elegant, and just a touch dangerous looking and it completely floored me!
  • The Funky and Fun Tutu: Not all tutus have to be serious, folks! This year at Wellington I saw so many tutus featuring fun patterns, bold colors, and playful embellishments. They remind me a little bit of the playful colours in the tutus I wore in my first performances as a student but now they really showcase the personal style of the dancer, a kind of outward expression of self.

Beyond the captivating fashion, I was blown away by the talent on display at the festival. Canadian ballet, I can tell you, is booming, full of bright young dancers with impressive skill and raw talent. I'm so incredibly excited to be part of this thriving community of dancers and I couldn't help but feel inspired by all the energy and dedication. This isn't your momma's ballet! This is the future of ballet, it's wild, creative and fun! I really was floored! I was so touched by how hard they worked and dedicated they are to their craft!

One thing that truly stood out to me was the incredible passion and enthusiasm from everyone, from the young students to the seasoned professionals. You could feel the excitement and energy buzzing in the air, and it was contagious! This sense of camaraderie and love for the art of dance is what makes ballet so special and a real part of the culture of Canada. Ballet brings people together and makes us stronger. So that makes every tutu, and every dancer wearing it, a true star.

Wellington, you've definitely made a tutu-tally unforgettable impression! Until next time, remember: twirl, dream, and always express your inner diva. And don't forget to use #TutuTuesday and #WellingtonNB to show off your fabulous dancewear! Let's keep the tutu love alive. It's going to be a great year!
