Tutu Tuesday in Twillingate, Newfoundland and Labrador: A Ballet Blogger’s Adventures in a Picturesque Town

Hey everyone! It's your girl, Nadia, back with another blog post. This time I’m taking you on an adventure to the charming town of Twillingate, Newfoundland and Labrador. Known for its breathtaking coastal scenery and unique heritage, this place really stole my heart (and my Instagram feed!).

Now, as a ballet dancer, I love incorporating the art form into my everyday life. And what better way to celebrate the beauty of dance than with a #TutuTuesday photoshoot? Twillingate provided the perfect backdrop for my little tutu adventure. Think charming streets, colourful houses, and the vast Atlantic Ocean. Seriously, it was like something out of a fairytale!

I opted for a classic Romantic tutu, a single-layered tulle skirt, in a soft lilac colour that felt both ethereal and light against the rugged coastline. The billowing layers were perfectly designed for twirling and swirling, and they added an extra dose of grace and movement to the photos.

First, we took a stroll through the quaint town. Twillingate's colourful houses and quaint shops offered the perfect setting for a playful ballet shoot. I’m not gonna lie, I felt like a princess in my lilac tutu as I danced my way through the historic streets, even though a couple of tourists definitely stared – it’s all in the fun, eh!

Next up was a scenic coastal spot. I love how the wind blew through the tulle, adding a whimsical element to the shoot. My tulle looked even more voluminous in the breeze, adding a touch of drama. My photographer captured some truly breathtaking shots of me twirling with the ocean waves in the background.

The whole day felt like a ballet in itself, blending movement and artistry with the picturesque scenery. There's something magical about combining the elegance of ballet with the rugged beauty of Newfoundland. The stark contrast added a striking dimension to my shots, and I am totally obsessed with how they turned out.

Why Tutu Tuesday?

  • Inspiring creativity: Every Tuesday, I challenge myself to incorporate my love of ballet into something new. Whether it's trying a new choreography, learning a new move, or just wearing a tutu in a new environment! I have had tutu Tuesday photo shoots in a farmer's market, a library, and even a ski resort. Every Tuesday is an opportunity to spark my creativity and push the boundaries of my artistry.
  • Celebrating ballet: The tutu is an iconic symbol of ballet. The simple fabric of tulle can transform ordinary moments into extraordinary ones. And who doesn't love twirling in tulle? My tutu Tuesday project reminds me of the joy and elegance that ballet brings to my life.
  • Encouraging confidence: My Tutu Tuesdays inspire me to step out of my comfort zone and express myself without reservation. Don’t get me wrong, I had a few nerves about showing up in my tutu in a new place, but it really forced me to focus on how I was feeling in my own body.

A glimpse into Canada’s Ballet Scene

  • As a ballet dancer based in Canada, I'm so lucky to be surrounded by world-class ballet companies like the National Ballet of Canada, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet and The Alberta Ballet. But the beauty of dance goes beyond the major cities.

  • There are fantastic dance studios across Canada where the next generation of dancers are growing their passion. It’s so inspiring to see talented young dancers working hard and dreaming big. The beauty of dance knows no geographic boundaries.
  • From coast to coast, Canada embraces a love of movement and performance arts. Ballet, whether at the professional level or just for fun, brings joy and connection across the country. This has become such an important part of the Canadian cultural tapestry.
