Tutu Tuesday in Dundurn, Saskatchewan: A Whirlwind of Dance and Fashion!

Hey there, dance lovers and fashionistas! It’s your girl, Claire, back with another Tutu Tuesday! I’m a little bit giddy today, guys. I’ve been all about finding the perfect tutu lately – it’s a challenge, but totally worth it. And I can’t think of a better place to showcase a fabulous tutu than my home city: Dundurn, Saskatchewan. We’re not exactly known as the world capital of haute couture, but when it comes to passion for dance, we hold our own, believe me.

Saskatchewan is pretty known for its sprawling prairies and wheat fields, but there’s another side to this province: the booming dance scene! There are a lot of ballet schools across the country, and we have a whole bunch here too. And what’s a dancer without their signature tutu, right? Today’s focus is on a particular piece: the “Romantic tutu.” Think lightweight layers of tulle with that soft, flowy, billowing effect – almost like a delicate, romantic dream. I mean, I’ve even tried wearing this one while I’m doing a barre class at home – and I don’t get self-conscious, no way. My neighbourhood has some pretty dedicated fellow dancers, and there are even some senior citizens out there learning ballet and rockin' out with their own little black tutus! Just incredible!

This tutu has so much character. This one isn't the "classical" tutu, not like the big, rigid pouter pigeon ones you often see with dancers, which, in ballet world, is called the "classic" or "traditional" tutu. They are dramatic, sure, but for a ballerina who has been practicing since her formative years, the traditional tutu is part of her life, so much so that it may almost feel like second nature!

Today, the romantic tutu is about that subtle elegance, a timeless beauty – and it's incredibly versatile. You can find some amazing romantic tutus online, but here’s my biggest advice? Check out your local dance shops in Saskatoon, or even in Regina! There’s so much history packed into these local stores. The shopkeepers, you know? They know all the dancers in Saskatchewan, and if you ask, they'll definitely point you in the right direction – they will help you find your tutu soulmates. There's so much potential to be discovered, in the way they drape the layers, in the flow of the skirt! I love the soft colours too – think light blues and pinks, even white! They just radiate an airy quality and complement everything perfectly. I’ve paired it with a black tank top and my trusty dance shoes and feel totally fabulous – I look so put-together, and confident.

But you know me! I can’t stick to just one tutu, and Dundurn has plenty of options! Another must-try is the “layered tutu.” It’s basically a big explosion of color and drama – it’s bold and exciting! Imagine several tiers of tulle cascading downwards. Think layers of turquoise and lavender or ruby red and cobalt blue, each tier in a vibrant, eye-catching hue – each of these layered pieces give off a whole other energy. You really feel like a princess in a fantasy fairytale! Just remember, it can be heavy – so wear a bra and comfortable straps.

Now, if you’re not quite feeling the flamboyant layered or Romantic look, a classic or “paillette” tutu is worth checking out, for that show-stopping look that really turns heads! It's all about the tiny sparkling sequins – so many that it gives off a radiant glow. This is the "dress to impress" style – no one’s looking away from this. It’s typically black with intricate sequin detailing and it looks absolutely mesmerizing. Just be prepared to turn heads!

Tutus can get real formal real fast, though. We dancers know. Which brings us to the “classical” tutu, with its classic structure and rigid tulle, just waiting for those perfect leaps and turns! If there’s a specific style you have your eye on, you can probably find something in any one of our ballet stores or workshops! Here in Dundurn, we have quite a few of those, actually! I bet there are tons more stores and boutiques out there too – you can find a ton of these all over Saskatchewan! You just gotta get out there and explore. You're always sure to find something great when you keep an open mind. And maybe check out your local thrift shop! A great dance tutu is only a trip to a second-hand store away!

There are so many types of tutus available, which gives so much expression, and it doesn't end with dance. You’ll never catch me in my day-to-day going around in a sparkly pink one, but what about your everyday wardrobe? Think fun party nights out! Just use the colours and details for inspiration – there are tons of creative looks that draw on the style of a tutu! Think flowing skirts and bold colors. I'm all for bold colour! This season? A splash of sapphire! Maybe a teal blue! There's a lot of gorgeous styles out there!

So whether you’re in Dundurn or on a little dance-tastic adventure in Saskatchewan, take a twirl, get some ideas, and express yourself! You know me, it's always been a huge part of being a ballerina. But remember! Always practice safely – there’s nothing wrong with trying out some dance moves without a tutu in tow. And, most importantly, remember to have fun!

Happy Tutu Tuesday, Saskatchewan!
