Tutu Tuesday in Lakeshore, Manitoba, Canada #tututuesday

Hey everyone, it's your girl, Chantal, back with another #tututuesday blog post, and today we're taking things to the prairies! It's been a whirlwind of rehearsals and performances, and I couldn't resist showcasing some of my favourite tutus from the amazing ballet scene here in Manitoba.

Now, let's get real โ€“ ballet in Canada, particularly outside major cities like Toronto and Montreal, often gets a bit of a side-eye. But here in Manitoba, there's a vibrant community of dancers, both professional and amateur, and the love for classical ballet runs deep. We're all about those grand classics like Swan Lake and Giselle, but also exploring contemporary works and supporting emerging choreographers.

Speaking of tutu styles, let me give you a little peek into the different worlds we inhabit! From the classic romantic tutu, all soft and billowing, to the streamlined and sharp lines of the contemporary tutu, the options are endless! There's a perfect tutu for every story we want to tell.

So, back to our #tututuesday theme. I thought it would be fun to break down some of my current tutu favourites:

  • The Romantic Tutu: Okay, we have to start with the iconic. The classic romantic tutu, usually crafted in layers of tulle and embellished with sequins, evokes the magical world of fairies and dreams. Think ethereal grace and delicate beauty.
  • The Classical Tutu: Think shorter, tighter, and just as majestic. It's all about showing off those sculpted leg lines and emphasizing powerful jumps and pirouettes. It's the workhorse of the ballet world, seen in pretty much every major production.
  • The Contemporary Tutu: This one is a bit more modern, often designed with unconventional fabrics like stretch jersey and sheer panels, allowing for fluidity and expressive movement. Think free-flowing and defying traditional ballet styles.
  • The "Off-Duty" Tutu: Yeah, even ballerinas need their off days! But just because we're out of costume doesn't mean we have to give up all things tutu-related! This can be a vintage tutu styled with a casual outfit for a quirky street look or a simple tutu as a comfortable but playful choice for a picnic.

There's no one right tutu for every occasion, which is what makes it so exciting! Every tutu tells a story, and it's our job as dancers to make that story come alive. I'm excited to share more of my tutu journey with you guys as we move forward, whether it's from rehearsals to performances and even my off-duty tutu adventures!

I also have to shout out some of my favorite local ballet schools in Manitoba. These studios are pumping out the next generation of talent! Check out places like:

  • Winnipeg Royal Ballet โ€“ This powerhouse is the main ballet company in Winnipeg. Think top-tier professionals and exciting performances.
  • Ballet Manitoba โ€“ An institution in the community. It's all about bringing ballet to everyone through both training and outreach. They've even got a dedicated studio just for little ones to take their first steps on this journey!
  • The Royal Winnipeg Ballet โ€“ Known for its renowned dancers and a tradition of breathtaking performances.

Manitoba may not be the first place people think of when they imagine a thriving ballet scene, but the love and passion are evident in every studio and performance. If you ever find yourself in the area, be sure to check out one of our incredible ballet performances! And don't forget to share your own tutu love on #tututuesday. Let's bring the beauty and grace of ballet to the world!

Happy #tututuesday from your favourite Canadian ballerina! Until next time, stay graceful and stylish.

XOXO,
Chantal
