Tutu Tuesday in Wasagamack, Manitoba: A Whirlwind of Ballet Beauty and Community Spirit

It’s been a while since I’ve ventured outside of the big city. You know, the whole Toronto-ballet-life thing has kept me pretty busy, and I’ve admittedly grown accustomed to the hum of the city, the endless rows of studios, and the predictable rush of daily ballet rehearsals. But something has been missing in my life: that feeling of community, that shared passion that stretches beyond the confines of a concrete jungle.

So when the opportunity arose to visit Wasagamack, Manitoba, for their annual Tutu Tuesday event, I couldn't say no. This wasn’t just about the tutus, though those definitely had their own allure. This was about the chance to connect with a community passionate about dance, to celebrate the power of movement and the beauty of ballet, all under the vast Manitoba sky. And let me tell you, there’s nothing like the crisp, clean air and boundless blue expanse of the Canadian prairie to stir up your soul and get your heart dancing.

This small First Nations community, located on the shores of Wasagamack Lake, is far removed from the bustling dance studios of Toronto, yet they possess an infectious energy and love for the art form that would rival any city. For a day, Wasagamack transformed into a vibrant tableau of colour and movement as the whole community gathered in celebration of dance and art. From toddlers taking their first tentative steps in their mini tutus to seasoned dancers gliding gracefully in traditional styles, every age group, every talent, and every passion found its place in this whirlwind of vibrant joy.

My initial trepidation melted away as I was enveloped in their warm embrace, witnessing the genuine spirit of love and acceptance that pulsed through the air. Here, dance wasn’t about perfection or polished performances, it was about self-expression, about joy and freedom, about belonging. And with each graceful spin, every elevated leap, and every heartwarming smile, I found myself transported to a place where the universal language of dance truly resonated, bridging cultural divides and speaking volumes about the power of artistic expression.

This was tutu heaven for sure! There were tutus of every colour imaginable, each more elaborate than the last. From the classic fluffy tulle of a Romantic ballerina tutu, perfectly encapsulating the innocence and grace of classical dance, to the modern, layered, flowing tutu styles favoured in contemporary choreography, embodying dynamism and individuality, Wasagamack showcased a stunning spectrum of design and inspiration. I even caught glimpses of Indigenous dance tutus adorned with vibrant beadwork and intricate designs, echoing a legacy of cultural tradition and beauty.

One of the highlights of Tutu Tuesday was the 'Dance Across the Lake' event. As the sun dipped towards the horizon, painting the sky in hues of gold and amber, a breathtaking performance unfolded on the shimmering surface of Wasagamack Lake. Young and old dancers, both amateur and professional, converged in a kaleidoscope of movement and colour. With the backdrop of a fading sky, they moved with a profound grace and passion that was simply electrifying. Watching their bodies ripple through the water like ripples of hope, echoing the pulse of the vibrant community spirit, brought tears to my eyes. There was something about the raw emotion and passion on display, unhindered by the polished facade of city performances, that hit a chord deep within me.

We wrapped up the day with a delicious communal feast of traditional indigenous foods. This communal meal underscored the sense of shared experience, of kinship, of a community celebrating together through dance and shared culinary delights. From sharing laughs and stories around crackling fire pits to sharing tips on sewing those perfect tulle tutus, the community spirit felt incredibly authentic. Even as the festivities dwindled, I knew I wouldn't leave Wasagamack the same. I carried with me a renewed appreciation for the sheer power of dance, a profound respect for the resilient community of Wasagamack, and the unwavering belief that passion can bloom even in the most unexpected corners of the world.

To me, Tutu Tuesday in Wasagamack was more than just a celebratory day of tutus. It was a vibrant affirmation of dance's power to unite, to inspire, to spark joy, and to connect people on a deeper, more human level. This was more than just a #tututuesday. This was a celebration of life, love, community, and a resounding call for the continued appreciation and promotion of dance in every nook and cranny of our beloved Canada.

And as I return to the dance studios of Toronto, I'll carry the memory of Wasagamack's Tutu Tuesday with me, reminding me of the importance of staying grounded in the roots of dance, in community, in shared passions, and in the power of tutus to make us feel fabulous.
