Tutu Tuesday in Franklin Centre, Quebec: A Whirlwind of Twirling and Tradition

Hey everyone! It's your girl, Chloe, back with another installment of my blog, where we explore all things ballet, fashion, and everything in between! And what better way to kick off the week than with a celebration of all things tulle, right? That's right, folks, it's Tutu Tuesday! 🩰

This week, I decided to head down to Franklin Centre, Quebec, a charming little town known for its rich cultural heritage and thriving arts scene. As a Canadian ballet dancer myself, I couldn't resist the opportunity to delve into the local ballet community and check out some stunning tutus on display. The #tututuesday vibe was strong, and I had to share my findings with you! 🇨🇦

Now, let's talk tutus! We're talking a rainbow of colours, a myriad of textures, and every shape and size imaginable. There are the classic Romantic tutus, those delicate layers of tulle that billow out like clouds, perfect for ethereal ballets like Swan Lake. Then there are the more modern tutus, featuring sleek lines and edgy cuts that reflect the dynamism of contemporary choreography. Even the pointe shoes themselves came in various colours, some covered in rhinestones, others emblazoned with beautiful patterns.

Walking around Franklin Centre, I felt transported back to a time when ballet was a true spectacle, when elaborate costumes and majestic movements were meant to mesmerize audiences. And, frankly, they still do!

My favourite part of the day? Getting to meet with the local ballet instructors. They were such a warm and welcoming bunch, eager to share their knowledge and love of dance. I was particularly inspired by a conversation I had with a seasoned teacher, Marie-Claire, who told me how the community thrives because they teach the next generation to have pride and passion in Canadian Ballet, and she's even involved in getting more girls involved in the arts. It truly warmed my heart. It reminds me of why I fell in love with ballet all those years ago, for the camaraderie, the joy, the way it lets you escape into a world of pure imagination. It's not just a dance, it's a cultural experience.

Now, enough about me rambling! Let's get to the real meat of this blog post – the tutus! Here's what caught my eye:

  • The Royal Tulle: I can't help but start with this one. I stumbled upon a breathtaking royal blue tutu, featuring layers upon layers of perfectly gathered tulle. It had this mesmerizing shimmer that literally caught the light from every angle, almost like it was breathing. And then the added details! Glittering sequins, tiny white bows around the waistband— pure enchantment!
  • The Black Swan's Dream: Ok, you guys know me, a little drama is always in style. There was this absolutely stunning black tutu. It wasn't your typical black tutu. This one featured an intriguing layered design, like an exploding explosion of layers of silk, some darker than the others, and the centre was accented by a burst of crystal-covered netting that reminded me of a delicate spiderweb catching the moonlight. #BlackSwanGoals
  • The Pastel Palette: We need a little colour to spice up those monochrome tutus! I absolutely loved a pastel pink tutu I found on a student from Ecole de Ballet ( a really well-known ballet school!). The tulle was the most delicate fabric. It moved like a soft cloud, just a gorgeous reminder of all the whimsical colours ballet costumes are made with.
  • The "Uptown Girl": I saw this beauty hanging in a storefront. This tutù featured an absolutely sleek white skirt that hugged the dancer's body. And just above the knees, it blossomed into layers of white and ivory tulle, which made me think of a dancer ready for New York City! A fusion of elegance and boldness — it's like they brought the stage directly into everyday life!
  • The Bohemian Belle: A real stunner, this one! This tutù took that classic tutu design and gave it a playful makeover, like the ultimate statement piece. It had a short circular base layer ( which you don't often see), but with feathers at the edges of each layer. A nod to the artistry of costumes on a bigger stage. It screamed "out-of-the-box," a statement. And we love it.

But you know, the best part? Watching all the talented dancers strut their stuff at Centre d'Arts (Franklin Centre's theatre)! So, how do YOU embrace the #tututuesday trend in YOUR community? What do YOU want your tutu story to be? Let's get chatty! #Tututuesday #balletcanada #franklincentre #quebec
