Tutu Tuesday in Tottenham: A Dance with Diversity

Well, darling, it’s Tutu Tuesday and you know what that means! It’s time to ditch the norm and embrace the fabulousness that is the tutu! But before we unleash our inner ballerinas, let’s talk about the location, shall we? Tottenham, North London. It may not be the most obvious choice for a tutu pilgrimage, but trust me, darlings, it’s a hidden gem for fashionistas, especially if you like a touch of quirky and unexpected.

I arrived in Tottenham on a blustery Tuesday morning, armed with my trusty camera and my even more trusty tulle skirt – it’s a statement piece that you simply cannot go wrong with. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Honestly, the image that sprang to mind was a drab concrete jungle. But I was so wrong, oh so very wrong!

Tottenham was a symphony of colour, a vibrant tapestry of diverse cultures and bustling markets. It was the perfect place for a tutu to stand out, a symbol of playfulness and artistic spirit in the midst of a vibrant, everyday life.

Finding Inspiration at Tottenham Market
  • My first stop was Tottenham Market. This is no ordinary market, darling, this is an explosion of vibrant colours and intoxicating aromas. Think spice stalls bursting with saffron and turmeric, rows of freshly baked sourdough, and mounds of vibrantly coloured fruits and vegetables.
  • But amongst all this glorious edible goodness, I spotted my muse - a small, independent haberdashery shop tucked away at the back of the market. They had an amazing selection of fabrics and lace - perfect for whipping up a fabulous DIY tutu!
  • I had to have it. That little shop held the secrets to a hundred potential tutus: dreamy chiffon in a spectrum of sunset hues, shimmering brocades perfect for a contemporary twist, and delicate tulle that danced even before I could imagine it in a skirt.
From Market to Gallery

Fueled by my creative burst, I decided to hit Tottenham Green – a lush haven amidst the urban landscape. This place had a wonderful buzz to it! It’s home to the lovely, bright new gallery, “The Platform” and it was where I discovered my next muse. I was absolutely enchanted by an exhibition titled "The Fabric of our Lives," showcasing textile art from artists across the globe.

These artists saw the potential for so much more than simple fabric! They wove tales, explored cultural heritage, and celebrated life's simple joys. It truly got me thinking about the power of fabric to inspire, to communicate, and most importantly, to celebrate life.

I realized that day, Tottenham wasn’t just about street food, it was about celebrating local talents, embracing the unconventional, and embracing a little bit of fun and fashion into your daily life! It was that infectious enthusiasm that Tottenham carried with it that reminded me exactly why I loved wearing tutus!

And of course, the other great thing about tutus is the way they embrace any kind of style. You can be classic and elegant with a classic, romantic-style tulle, or edgy and chic with a more avant-garde layered design and a dash of chainmail - a personal favourite! I was starting to get serious creative buzz about tutu-style inspiration that was all around me!

From the Streets to the Studio

In a classic case of "I'll do it later," I couldn't resist taking a detour through one of the streets. It’s hard not to get caught up in the vibe! People watching is my other secret obsession, and Tottenham didn't disappoint, darlings!

This little town is full of independent, stylish stores, which brought back the DIY vibe, and I ended up popping into the wonderful "Crafty Creations" to browse some colourful fabrics and crafting supplies! You could spend a lifetime here if you are a creative type!

It really got me thinking about my own tutu wardrobe and how I could update it for a new season. Should I go for a minimalist tulle that could go with anything or create something super voluminous for maximum dramatic flair?!

For me, the most inspiring aspect of #tututuesday wasn’t about achieving perfect “ballet dancer” style. It was about allowing my imagination to dance with the vibrant spirit of Tottenham - its creativity, diversity, and sense of fun.

As I wrapped up my day, I took one last look around. It felt as though my day wasn’t just about my tutu, but a reminder that the everyday can be magical. My day reminded me that a good dose of imagination and a splash of fashion is always the best way to start a week and, well, maybe a tutu is not as outlandish a choice of fashion as I initially thought.

So, darling, what are you waiting for? Whether it’s a weekend escape or just a change from the usual routine, why not venture into Tottenham and embrace the joy of a tutu?!
