Tutu Tuesday in Mont-Carmel, Quebec: A Whirlwind of Tulle and Inspiration

Bonjour, fellow dance lovers! As a Canadian ballet dancer living and breathing all things tutus, I couldn’t be more excited to share my love for these magical garments with you on this, our glorious #Tutuesday.

The crisp air of autumn in Mont-Carmel, Quebec, was electric with the anticipation of dance as I stepped out of my apartment this morning. My gaze fell upon a shimmering display of tulle and satin in my local dance studio window - a dazzling reminder that the art of ballet is a constant source of inspiration.

For those who don’t know, Tutu Tuesday is a weekly tradition in the world of ballet, a chance to celebrate the beauty and artistry of the tutu. It's not just about the traditional romantic tutu, with its tiers of tulle and fluffy clouds, though that is certainly a showstopper. It's about recognizing the incredible evolution of the tutu – the modern tutus that defy expectations and inspire contemporary choreography, the character tutus that whisper tales of different worlds, and even the everyday tutus we wear to class.

As a ballet dancer in Canada, I have the unique privilege of being part of a vibrant dance community with a rich history. There's a passion here for ballet that runs deep, nurtured by generations of dedicated artists. I think about all the brilliant ballerinas who came before me – the dancers who wore these tutus with such grace and elegance. I see them in my mind's eye, spinning, leaping, soaring through the air, their tutus catching the light. It’s humbling and inspiring all at once.

But Tutu Tuesday is more than just a tribute to history. It's a chance for dancers of all levels, from professionals to aspiring young ballerinas, to express themselves creatively and to connect with others who share their passion. It's a celebration of dance, of community, of joy.

I’ve been taking inspiration from my surroundings, the vibrant colors of fall foliage and the earthy tones of Quebec’s countryside. It’s fascinating how fashion and dance blend in such a way. In Mont-Carmel, it’s so easy to feel inspired. Maybe the colors from my grandmother's quilt, a stunning mosaic of warm hues – who knows where I’ll find the next idea for a #Tutuesday creation!

Today, I’m inspired to share some of the must-haves of Tutu Tuesday. Here are my favorite styles to wear while dancing:

  • The Romantic Tutu – This classic is timeless. Tiers and tiers of tulle, perfectly sculpted, catching the light and flowing beautifully, is my ultimate favourite! And that ballerina-bun with the flower… just magic. The Romantic Tutu has always been a symbol of elegance and grace. It’s a tutu that evokes a sense of wonder and fairytale, taking us back to a time of delicate steps and sweeping melodies.
  • The Modern Tutu – Bold and expressive. This Tutu is an extension of the body, designed to move and to challenge the traditional conventions of ballet. This is for the fearless dancer who wants to express themselves freely through their dance and isn’t afraid to go out of the box.
  • The Character Tutu – Full of life! The Character Tutu embraces the different facets of storytelling in ballet, creating distinct personas that move and interact with the music, with the stage, with the whole world, actually. Character Tutus can be elegant, powerful, mischievous, playful... the possibilities are endless.
  • The Everyday Tutu – For those days when you just want to feel like a ballerina, even when you’re not at the studio! These tutus come in a wide range of styles and colours. A comfy, beautiful way to get into a positive mindset for ballet! And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to wear tulle while grabbing groceries on the way to a morning ballet class in Mont-Carmel?

In the heart of Quebec, nestled amongst the charming streets of Mont-Carmel, the art of ballet feels truly alive. As I glide through my own dance class today, tutu whirling with every twirl, I'll be sure to take a moment to reflect on the beauty of dance and to appreciate the tutus that make it so special. Whether it’s a class in a Montreal studio, an open-air recital by a Quebec lake, or even a grocery store on the way home, Tutu Tuesday is a day to embrace the magic of movement and to celebrate our shared love of this elegant, expressive art form.

So, don your tutus, fellow dancers! And remember, even in a small town in Quebec, dance inspires. Dance is alive in our hearts, in our steps, and in our twirling tutus. Now, let's all celebrate #tututuesday in style!
